Tessa Violet Williams, previously known as Meekakitty, is a singer-songwriter and video blogger best known for her 2018 single “Crush”.
On July 16th, 2006, Tessa Violet launched a YouTube channel under nickname Meekakitty, posting her first video in 2017 for her senior project in high school. By July 2010, Meekakitty’s channel, where she mainly posted stories, skits and music videos, had over 440,000 subscribers with over 6.4 million views.
Between 2010 and 2012 Meekakitty posted several highly successful lip-syncing videos and fan-made music clips. In autumn 2011 Tessa Violet was a director of photography in a viral fan-made music video for AWOLNATION’s song “Sail”, also making an appearance in the video itself. The video gained over 302 million views in eight years.
On March 18th, 2014, Tessa Violet released her debut album Maybe Trapped Mostly Troubled under her own name. In June 2018 Tessa Violet released single “Crush”, which remains her most popular song as of January 2019 with over 28 million views on YouTube.
Russian Nationalist Memes
On December 9th, 2018, Russian nationalist VK community мемы для русских (“memes for the Russians”) posted a series of memes in which Tessa Violet was portrayed as a Russian nationalist.
In comments, мемы для русских subscribers speculated that the community admin chose to force the meme due to the personal affection for the musician. In one comment, the community admin hinted that Tessa Violet wearing Mishka/Мишка-branded pullover was one of the reasons for the force.
In the following month, more posts in which Tessa Violet was presented as a Russian nationalist and a propagator for the concept of the Russian National State appeared in мемы для русских community, while also spreading to other similar VK communities.
On January 5th, 2019, мемы для русских posted screenshots showing several upvoted Russian comments under Tessa Violet’s “Crush” video, most of them containing “Русские, вперед!” (“Go Russians!”) nationalist chant popular in related memes.
On January 8, 2019, YouTube user Пикрил П.К. uploaded an edited version of Tessa Violet’s “Crush” music video with “Русские, вперед!” chanting added over the chorus (shown below, left). The video gained over 45,000 views in one week. On the same day, YouTuber D.C.Prod uploaded a remix of Tessa Violet’s “Bad Ideas” music video edited in a similar fashion. The remix received over 12,000 views in the same period.
On January 10th, 2019, Redditor justlikestosleep posted a question in /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit asking about the influx of Russian comments under Tessa Violet’ “Crush” video.
On January 11th, Tessa Violet tweeted that she saw the video posted by Пикрил П.К.
