Overview

The 2019 Grammy Awards was an awards ceremony held by the Recording Academy to award the past year in the music industry. The festivities were held on January 28th, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Background

The Grammys, originally known as the Gramophone awards, have been held annually since 1959.

On December 7th, 2018, the nominees for the 61st annual Grammy awards were announced. Two months later, on February 6th, 2018, recording artist and Grammy-winner Alicia Keys was announced as the host of the 61st annual Grammy awards.

The ceremony was held on February 10th, 2019 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Motown Tribute

During the ceremony, recording artists Jennifer Lopez and Smokey Robinson performed a tribute to Motown records, the seminal Detroit-based soul and R&B record company. However, ahead of the performance, many online expressed concern that because Lopez was raised in New York City and not Detroit, she should not be leading the performance. Robinson defended Lopez’s involvement. He said, “I think anyone who is upset is stupid.”

During the ceremony, however, many criticized the performance, despite Robinson’s defense. The Twitter account for the Global Grind published a GIF of Motown recording artist Diana Ross’ daughter Rhonda Ross Kendrick on the phone at the award ceremony. The tweet received more than 2,000 retweets and 7,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below).

Twitter published a Moments page about the controversy.
