In elementary school, you probably learned a lot about Christopher Columbus. He sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and had three ships — the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. It was all just part of the curriculum.
Then, adulthood hit — and you might have started viewing Columbus in a completely different way. These days, he’s not celebrated quite as much for “discovering” the New World. Instead, he’s been put under the spotlight for the way he treated indigenous people. Records show he was violent, and even introduced a host of diseases. Those facts aren’t mentioned quite as often in school. So, even though he changed history, people rightfully believe that there are far better people out there to celebrate.
That’s why Indigenous Peoples’ Day was created, which overlaps with Columbus Day. It celebrates Native Americans and recognizes that they were oppressed. And, that might be why certain retailers are starting to drop the phrase “Columbus Day Sale.” It’s great, because it means the world is progressing — and, we can still celebrate the good parts of history with a full online cart.
This Monday, October 14th, you can read up on both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day and also get some great discounts in the meantime. Plenty of stores are offering up some great deals. And if you’re lucky enough to have the day off from work, even better — you have more time to shop online.
Here are 15 stores that are celebrating the weekend holiday by dropping some incredible discounts.
