“Has anyone else seen this happen? We had a meal at O Bar recently and the bill included an ‘optional’ tip of around 7.5% in the total. When the EFTPOS machine was given to us, the amount on the machine included this ‘optional’ tip amount.
We aren’t opposed to tipping — my husband is from the USA and is used to tipping and we were pretty happy with the meal and service, so we were going to tip anyway. But this wasn’t given to us as an option, just added automatically. There wasn’t anything in the booking about it either.
I’ve seen mandatory tipping for large groups, but never for two people. Is this normal practice at high-end restaurants in Sydney?”
