At least six people were killed and 24 others were wounded in a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, authorities said.
“On a day that we came together to celebrate community and freedom, we are instead mourning the tragic loss of life and struggling with the terror that was brought upon us,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said at a news conference.
Police are still searching for the shooter, who they believe is a white man, between 18 and 20 years old, with longer black hair. Authorities said the shooting appears to be random and that the suspect opened fire from a rooftop. A “high-powered” rifle was recovered as the search continues, authorities said.
