Asad ad-Din Shirkuh bin Shadhi or Shirkuh, meaning (“lion of the mountains”) was a Kurdish military commander and uncle of Salahuddin Ayubi.
His military and diplomatic efforts in Egypt were key factors in establishing the Ayyubid dynasty in that country.
He was described as an able and energetic warrior, eager for glory and of wide experience in military affairs. He was generous and a man of great endurance.
