Africa in 1914.

by mapology.graphics

At the beginning of World War I, the geopolitical situation in Africa was complicated and tense, due to the intense colonial competition between the European powers.

The division of Africa between the European powers took place in the 19th century under the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885. At the outbreak of World War I, most of the continent was already under the control of the European colonial powers, including Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal.

Competition between these powers was particularly fierce in West Africa, where new colonies began to emerge as a result of gold and diamond discoveries in the 19th century.
