“We had a mini-family reunion. My brother (who lived out of state with my dad) was visiting, and we went to visit one of my aunts while another came with her children. Most of these people were more like strangers to me. We went to the mall when I went to the bathroom and saw I had gotten my first period. I called my mom to the stall who, for some reason, couldn’t just take my word for it. She gave me a pad but insisted I ‘show her.’ I had no space to be alone with my thoughts on getting my period. I stayed back the day the family drove everyone back to the airport, but they called me and my brother from the car.”
“My brother talked to my cousin first, and I heard him go: ‘Oh….she did? I didn’t know that’ while looking weird. When it was my turn to talk, my cousin goes, ‘So, you got your period huh?’ My mom decided to tell everyone in the car before I had even processed that I had finally gotten my period. She still laughs about it. I was barely 12.”
