1. Cheese

Scientists from Harvard warn that eating too much can be just as much trouble for sleep as hunger, so they advise to eat something light at nighttime. For example, they recommend eating several slices of cheese that have enough flavor to satisfy the taste receptors and won’t be too difficult for the body to digest.

2. Yogurt

According to nutrition experts, greek yogurt is perfect for a night snack because it doesn’t contain a lot of fats but it does contain a lot of protein. According to studies, protein in yogurt not only makes you feel full but it also helps the body to burn more calories in the daytime.

3. Crackers

Whole wheat crackers (not all regular crackers) can be eaten without causing too much harm to healthy sleep. They contain so-called slow carbohydrates that keep you fuller for longer.

4. Popcorn

Nutrition expert Erika Kannall advises people who like snacks at nighttime to eat a bowl of popcorn without salt. This type of snack won’t impact body shape at all.

You can make the popcorn tastier by adding black pepper or garlic to it.

5. Eggs

A boiled egg contains only 75 kcal and it’s great for a night snack. According to Erika Kannall, such a snack will allow you to forget about the hunger till morning and won’t turn into extra inches on your waist.

6. Vegetables

If you know for sure that you will wake up at night to have a snack but you realize that one kind of food won’t be enough for you, you can prepare some kind of a dish in advance like a vegetable salad, for example.

6 Foods to Eat and 7 to Avoid If You’re Suffering From Gastritis

Food itself rarely causes gastritis. The leading cause of gastritis is the Helicobacter pylori infection. However, some foods can aggravate the symptoms by irritating the stomach lining, while other foods can minimize the discomfort and even help treat the painful condition.

Here at Bright Side, we researched the most beneficial foods to eat if you have gastritis, as well as foods you should stay away from.

Gastritis is the inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining. Sometimes it manifests itself without any symptoms, but when there are symptoms, they can be quite unpleasant and include abdominal pain and bloating, nausea, indigestion, and loss of appetite. In some cases, H. pylori-induced gastritis can lead to ulcers and even stomach cancer if left untreated.

Foods you can eat if you’re suffering from gastritis include:

High-fiber foods like nuts and seeds, legumes, berries, and green vegetables are beneficial for the whole digestive system, so it’s no wonder a gastritis diet is a diet high in fiber. Broccoli is especially important for gastric health: besides being a good source of fiber, it also contains high levels of sulforaphane, a compound that kills the H. pylori bacteria.

While fatty foods aren’t the best choice for someone suffering from gastritis, foods rich in healthy fats are definitely an exception. Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, sardines, walnuts, and chia seeds help reduce inflammation of the stomach lining and even have a preventive effect against H. pylori-induced gastritis and other gastric disorders. Other sources of healthy fats are avocados, olive oil, and different nuts and seeds.

If you have gastritis, probiotics such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut can help in several ways. First, being bacteria themselves (the good kind), they fight the H. pylori bacteria for space and food and decrease its load. Second, they boost your immune system, helping it fight the disease. Third, they increase the gut’s ability to absorb the nutrients needed for a successful recovery.

Protein helps repair the damage done by gastritis to the stomach lining. However, not all proteins are equal. It’s important to choose lean proteins when suffering from gastritis because the fat in animal products (with the exception of omega-3-rich fatty fish) can only make the condition worse. Good sources of lean protein include chicken and turkey breast, egg whites, tuna, and beans.

Since H. pylori is a type of bacteria, it’s only logical to fight it with something antibacterial. Flavonoids are known for their antibacterial properties, inhibiting the growth of many types of bacteria, including H. pylori. Garlic, onions, cranberries, and celery are all great sources of flavonoids. Some other common antibacterial foods are honey, ginger, and turmeric.

While fruit juices aren’t recommended for people with gastritis (due to high levels of sugar and acid with none of the fiber), some vegetable juices and smoothies are a different story. Potato juice, for example, has antioxidative properties and can relieve stomach pain. Pumpkin juice, besides being very rich in nutrients, can actually decrease gastric acidity, helping the stomach lining heal faster.

Here are some foods it’s best to avoid if you’re suffering from gastritis:

When it comes to foods and drinks that cause higher acidity in the body, some are a no-brainer. Everyone knows cola and excessive sugar are bad for you, and citrus fruit and juices are definitely acidic, right? But not everyone knows that other, seemingly innocuous foods can also irritate the stomach lining. Coffee, grains, and even otherwise healthy and antioxidant-rich tomatoes are also considered acidic and their consumption can aggravate the condition even further.

High levels of cholesterol found in fried and high-fat foods have been linked to increased incidence of gastritis, making it one of the rare cases of food actually causing this disease. Naturally, if you already suffer from gastritis, it’s best to avoid these foods to prevent the condition from getting worse.

It’s usually recommended to avoid all carbonated drinks to relieve the painful symptoms of gastritis. Obviously, soda is the worst offender in this category, with its high acidity and sugar load making it one of the unhealthiest drinks, overall. Seemingly healthy sparkling water is also not optimal for gastric health: after you take a sip, carbon dioxide turns into irritating carbonic acid, responsible for sparkling water’s “bite.”

This is a really simple one: spicy foods and seasonings like hot peppers, wasabi, horseradish, and mustard add “flame” to an already inflamed stomach, instantly making the pain worse. However, it’s important not to exclude seasonings all together, as some can be quite beneficial when dealing with gastritis. Cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger, among others, are known to combat harmful bacteria.

Since alcohol consumption is one of the causes of gastritis, excluding (or at least minimizing) alcohol intake if you’re suffering from gastritis is very important. Alcohol irritates and can even erode parts of the stomach lining, exposing it to the acids and never letting it heal.

In addition to often being fried and deep-fried, fast food usually contains preservatives and artificial flavorings that can irritate the stomach. The same goes for processed foods and ready-made meals: for example, excessive consumption of monosodium glutamate, found in most of these foods, leads to gastritis and other gastric disorders.

Commonly used NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen aren’t technically foods, but, being one of the main causes of gastritis, they still deserve to be mentioned in this list. They affect the stomach lining the same way that alcohol does and, just like alcohol, they shouldn’t be used during the treatment of gastritis.

Fiber is practically an indigestible carbohydrate, meaning that foods that contain it have fewer calories than the same amount of other carbs. Foods that are high in fiber fill you up faster and suppress your appetite, which makes them great for weight loss.

Types of grains

To start, we should know that the same grain can have very different properties depending on how it was processed and understanding this is very critical.

  • Whole grains contain all parts of the seed, bran, germ, and endosperm. The whole grain has way more fiber, vitamins, and minerals than refined grains. You can find it in the whole form or as a flour.
  • Refined grains have had the bran and germ removed, that’s why it’s normally a finer and softer texture. Unfortunately, it loses most of its nutrients and fiber during the refining process.
  • Enriched grains are refined grains after some nutrients, which were all lost during refining, were replaced.
  • Fortified grains have additional nutrients added to them, that don’t occur naturally in that particular type of grain. It could be vitamins or minerals like folic acid or iron.

Grains to eat when losing weight

Generally speaking, you should choose whole grains, high in fiber, with a low Glycemic Index (GI), because the more vitamins and minerals it has, the healthier it is.

1. Whole Oats

Oats are very high in avenanthramide, an antioxidant that protects the heart. The fiber in oats is the beta-glucan fiber. It is known for its ability to absorb a lot of water, which means that it swells in your stomach, increasing the feeling of fullness. Generally speaking, oats are a great food for losing weight and keeping it off, as long as you keep an eye on the add-ons.

2. Brown rice

Brown rice is rich in so many vitamins that it almost becomes a superfood. It has antioxidants, magnesium, phosphorus, B-group vitamins and is one of the very few products that is high in selenium. Quinoa and buckwheat are great for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Quinoa is also high in protein and very high in B-group vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. Although quinoa is not low in calories, it has a low Glycemic Index, meaning it won’t cause a big spike in blood sugar.

7. Corn

Corn can be extremely healthy for you when it’s whole. It’s a good source of B-group vitamins, magnesium, and phosphorus, and also high in antioxidants. Corn is also relatively low in calories, at least until you add butter to it.

8. Lentils

Lentils are a unique grain because they’re really rich in protein and fiber, low in fat, and high in slow-digesting carbohydrates. A half-cup serving of lentils contains 20 grams of carbohydrates and 8 grams of fiber, meaning that 8 of the 20 grams of carbohydrates won’t get digested. On top of that, they’re loaded with B vitamins, zinc, iron, potassium, and calcium.

Grains to avoid when losing weight

Refined grains are the ones you’ll want to stay away from. They only contain calories and don’t deliver any nutrition. Some whole grains with a high GI are also not a good choice if you’re keeping an eye on your waistline.

White rice is a refined carbohydrate, high in calories, low in fiber, and hardly has any nutrition. It has a very high GI, so it turns into sugar very soon after you eat it and only fills you up for a short period of time.

2. Wheat

Wheat can also be called a superfood. A superfood for gaining weight. It contains amylopectin A, a super starch which is extremely fattening. Wheat products are very high in calories, have a very high GI, and are very addictive, including the whole wheat products. A Blogger Showed the Changes in Her Face When She Started to Eat Meat After a 4-Year Vegan Diet

A blogger from the Netherlands, Kasumi Kriss, tells about her digression from a vegan diet that she followed for 4 years. Only 3 weeks of eating high-quality meat transformed her from both the inside and the outside.

Kasumi Kriss decided to try a vegan diet for reasons connected with health and it really helped for the first time. Her acne and pimples changed, her well-being improved, and she became more energetic. But at the beginning she faced some issues with digestion.

After 2 years the condition of her skin changed (acne, dryness, and irritation appeared again), while the food started to seem like it was working against her. Her nails and hair became brittle and due to the stress on her body, her menstrual cycle stopped for 4 months.

Once, during this vegan exploration, Kasumi allowed herself to eat one boiled egg. The effect of that egg exceeded all expectations: she didn’t have any negative thoughts for the next 3 days and her mood started to improve drastically.

Shortly after, the blogger decided to stop her vegan diet and changed her eating habits. She shared her feelings with her subscribers saying, “Sometimes I feel strange, but I think it’s the right solution.”

After only 3 weeks on this new diet, Kasumi sums it up saying, “My skin became better, my face is less chubby, but the main thing is that I don’t feel lifeless anymore.”
