7 Outdated Child Health Myths We’d Better Stop Believing

Undoubtedly, our moms and grandmas can share really wise and useful tips when it comes to many different spheres of life. But before relying on their expertise, we have to weigh the pros and cons, especially if we’re talking about children.

Bright Side has studied the most common old wives’ tales and found out which pieces of advice are actually useless.

7. To reduce fever, you have to swaddle your baby.

We used to hear that to reduce a baby’s fever, we had to swaddle them. But it’s not recommended to do this since the skin controls the body’s temperature more effectively itself. If you put too many clothes on your baby, the temperature will get higher or won’t drop.

Doctors recommend:

  • Place a cool, damp washcloth on your child’s forehead;
  • Offer your child plenty of fluids;
  • Air out the room;
  • Remove layers of clothing so your child can lose heat more easily through their skin.

6. Don’t bathe your baby if they’re sick.

People used to think that if we bathed our children while they’re sick, they might get cold and feel worse. Lots of things have changed since then and bathrooms are more convenient nowadays.

Doctors say that you may bathe your baby even if they’re sick (but only if their body temperature isn’t higher than 99°F and they’re not suffering from a skin disease.)

5. To make your child’s hair thicker, you have to shave it.

There’s a belief that if a baby has thin and sparse hair, parents have to shave their baby’s head so that hair will start growing in thicker.

But this is a myth: hair won’t be any thicker, no matter whether you’re a child or an adult. Hair follicles are located several inches below the surface of the skin, so nothing that happens on the surface actually affects them. Why does this myth still exist? Many dermatologists say that it’s because of the difference between shaven and unshaven hair: when hair starts growing after shaving, it looks thicker. But it’s just a visual effect.

4. Teach your child to use the toilet as soon as possible.

Don’t worry if your small child doesn’t want to use the toilet now. We all are different and all children develop at their own pace, so if your baby isn’t ready, don’t force them. Some children start using the potty at 1 year, some at 2 years, and either way it’s fine.

3. Burns should be treated with butter.

This is a really common myth. Why do we believe it?

When we apply butter to a burn, we cover it with an impenetrable layer: it literally stops the skin from cooling down and doesn’t allow medicinal substances that you might apply on top of the butter to heal the skin. If you do this, you’ll just end up having to remove the butter layer and potentially damage the skin again.

Doctors recommend:

  • Put the burned skin under cool water (it shouldn’t be too cold);
  • Take a painkiller;
  • Apply an ointment for burns.
Then, it’s recommended to see a doctor.

2. You shouldn’t eat brightly colored food while breastfeeding.

Many people still think that if a mom eats something bright (for example, tomatoes), her baby will definitely suffer from an allergy. But it’s been proven that this is a myth.

Many children experience no problems at all. Moms are allowed to eat almost everything they want (but in reasonable amounts, of course.) If you’re still scared, just try to eat some brightly colored foods and watch your baby’s body reaction.

1. Lefties should be retrained.

In the past, families usually retaught their children if they thought they were going to become left-handed. But is this really necessary? Was it harmless to do this?

It turns out that it’s pretty bad. When a baby comes to this world, they already have a dominant hand, and when we try to go against nature, we might face negative consequences. A child’s concentration and learning ability may decrease. It’s important to go with the natural tendency of the child.

Have you ever followed any of these old fashioned rules?

8 Famous Men Opened Up About Their Mental Health, and Their Stories Inspire Millions

Everyone struggles sometimes with depression, but some famous men found enough courage to open up and start talking about anxiety and mental health problems. It definitely inspires people who suffer in silence and are afraid to speak up. It is important to talk aloud and seek help and treatment because everyone deserves to be heard and understood.

Bright Side decided to show some examples of 8 famous men who overcame different mental problems and took their lives under control, and it inspires all of us.

1. Dwayne Johnson and his battle with depression

One of the highest paid stars claimed that he was devastated, depressed and cried constantly. All this happened because of a series of circumstances. His mother attempted suicide in front of him and in several months they were evicted from their house. “I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly,” he said.

Years later, Dwane Johnson got numerous injuries and lost his dream to be a professional football player. The Canadian Football League that had a contract with him let him go. In a short time, his girlfriend broke up with him. Serious depression overtook him. Today the actor can say that he and his mother managed this condition and are in a good place.

2. Jim Carrey lost himself for some time in a serious depression.

There have been lots of discussions about Jim Carrey and his behavior in mass media, but there’s a reason why it’s called a “deep depression”. Many bad things had happened in his personal and professional life, and the suicide of his ex-girlfriend after they broke up left an imprint in his soul, but the actor found enough power to cope with his mental state.

In the interview, he confirmed, “There is not an experience of depression,” and claimed that he is not obsessed with his career anymore. He continued, “What’s happening is really good, but there is some really bad in there too. Some people have come at me in the last couple of years with the intent of breaking off a piece of the Holy Grail for themselves, but the grail isn’t a thing that you can break off”.

3. Prince Harry and his mental problems caused by his mother’s death

The Telegraph shared that in an interview with Prince Harry he accepted that he was shutting down all his emotions for almost 20 years: “I sought counseling after 20 years of not thinking about the death of my mother, Diana, and 2 years of total chaos in my life.” He also confirmed that Prince William tried to help him and pushed him to seek professional treatment.

Prince Harry had enough courage as a public person to speak to a professional about his mental health. He realizes now that losing his mother had a serious influence on his professional and personal life. Nowadays Prince Harry feels good and can be proud of himself because he decided to break stereotypes about mental health problems and encouraged people not to be afraid of accepting problems and asking for help.

4. Ryan Reynolds opened up and accepted his anxiety.

When you look at this handsome guy you probably think that he is strong, always cheerful, and full of jokes. The New York Times revealed the secrets of Ryan Reynolds, who confirmed that for a long time, he struggled with attacks of nausea and dread before talk-shows and has a fear of death. He said, “I have anxiety, I’ve always had anxiety.” Reynolds also explained that his early 20s were an unhinged period. During this time he was partying a lot and trying to “vanish in some way”. High anxiety and fears about his future were haunting him and he started self-medicating. Only after the death of his friend due to an overdose did he stop partying.

Today, Reynolds is happily married and has 2 kids. He appreciates his wife and accepts that she gives him a lot. Of course, he remains a famous person, and each time before an interview he tries to go into the character of Deadpool as not to allow the anxiety to overtake him.

5. James Franco admits his addictions and depression.

How often do you hear from people talking openly about their mental problems and addictions? Not often, because it is not easy, especially for a public figure. James Franco shared in a conversation with writer Edmund White for Out that he has a very addictive personality. As young as a teenager, he had some addictions and ironically, that’s the period of time when James Franco began to act. In 10 years, he found himself very depressed and broken.

In the same interview, the actor said that new hobbies appeared in his life. “I’ve started a new chapter of my life. I was very work-addicted and addicted to other things—not substances, I got over that a long time ago—but I’ve recently changed my life, and this is part of my therapy,” he explained. Art and sports always helped him to overcome difficult times and can be a sublimation of negative emotions.

6. Johnny Depp speaks out about depression, alcoholism, and financial struggles.

Johnny Depp’s interview with Rolling Stone resonated with many readers which didn’t come as a surprise. It was honest, bold and emotional. He admitted, “I was as low as I believe I could have gotten.” It was a period of time when he couldn’t take the pain anymore. His tough break up with Amber Heard, and battles with his former manager about money influenced him strongly. At that time he started to write in a diary which helped him. He said, “I poured myself a vodka in the morning and started writing until the tears filled my eyes and I couldn’t see the page anymore.” He tried to figure out what he could do to overcome all the emotional pain.

Johnny Depp has a lot to tell us about what happened in his life, but the main point is that he accepts that something went wrong and that he tried to fix it.

7. Michael Phelps says it’s okay to not be okay.

His life is an athletic dream, but not too many people know what he actually has felt and experienced. Michael Phelps some time ago made a big step in his life and revealed that he struggled with ADHD, “I [saw] kids who, we were all in the same class, and the teachers treated them differently than they would treat me. I had a teacher tell me that I would never amount to anything and I would never be successful.” Speaking up about mental health problems, he doesn’t try to pay more attention to himself, but there is a deeper meaning. It’s a call not to be afraid to talk to someone and ask for help. The moment you realize who you are with all your normalities and abnormalities, your life gets easier.

Michael Phelps found a way to cope with his condition as everyone else can. Having someone to talk to who can listen is very important.

8. Chris Evans and his struggle with social anxiety

In one of his interviews, Chris Evans revealed that anxiety kicks in during premieres and red carpet events, and he feels like he’s “walking on hot coals”. The actor describes his condition and emotions by saying, “You’re in the SUV with your family, your people. And then you have to pull over in some weird parking lot and do the swap. There are security and all these people. All of a sudden you’re out of your comfort zone. It’s strange. The little things that can tip you over.” He took some therapy sessions to overcome his unstable state.

Superheroes who don’t feel any fears exist only on screen, but in real life, we’re all vulnerable. Being afraid of public speaking and other things is okay and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

6 Tiny Ways You Can Better Your Mental Health, According to Psychologists

image

For many of us who are stressed, tired, and overworked, the concept of self-care can feel like a foreign luxury reserved for people with more time. But research shows taking care of yourself isn’t selfish or self-centered; rather, it improves health and overall well-being, making you more capable of accomplishing the things you want to do.

A recent thread on reddit asked psychologists to share common things people do (or don’t do) without realizing how damaging they are to their mental health. We’ve compiled some of their best answers to bring you a few easy changes you can make to your day-to-day that will ultimately improve your quality of life in the long term.

Tone Down the Venting

When we go through situations that are trying or anxiety-inducing, it’s common to air them out on the group text. After all, who hasn’t had a passive-aggressive spat with their boss and gone straight to Gchat to unload on their friends?

image

But according to psychologists, co-rumination, or “repeatedly discussing and rehashing our problems and difficult feelings with someone else without coming up with a solution or resolution” can be really detrimental in the long run.

So much so, that it can lead to depression and anxiety if your venting goes unchecked. So even though it feels good to revisit and process your problems with friends, the circular gossiping can actually hold you back from addressing your issues productively.

Next time you catch yourself rehashing your complaints with your friend group, ask yourself the following questions to keep yourself from co-ruminating:

  1. Is my problem new?
  2. Have I spoken about it before?
  3. Am I working myself up about something that hasn’t even happened yet?
  4. Do I have any new information to share or am I just repeating myself?

Try to Keep a More Regular Sleep Schedule

If your personal slogan is “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” you might want to reconsider your brand. Erratic sleep schedules and frequent all-nighters can be quite damaging to your mental and physical health, according to psychologists who urge adults to try for a minimum of 7-9 hours a night.

image

Research shows that, during sleep, the brain clears itself of harmful toxins like neuritic plaque and tangles “like a dishwasher,” per a University of Rochester neurosurgery professor. This helps to explain why we struggle to think clearly after a night of poor sleep.

If our toxins aren’t properly cleared, studies show they can ultimately lead to brain disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The best way to avoid these diseases? Prioritize 7–9 hours of sleep over another game of Fortnite or “just one more” episode of your favorite show. The TV will still be there tomorrow, we swear.

Don’t Sweep Your Problems Under the Rug

While overdoing it with repeated venting is decidedly unproductive, it can also be harmful — and ultimately counter-productive — to avoid thinking about problems altogether.

image

Avoidance coping, as psychologists call it, refers to dealing with your problems by, essentially, not dealing with them at all. For many people who have unsettling emotions or difficult memories, not calling them to mind may seem like a seductive solution.

But in fact, avoiding issues — rather than dealing with them and accepting how they make us feel — creates stress and anxiety, in addition to ravaging self-confidence, according to psychologists

If you feel like you use avoidance tactics to cope with your issues, try discussing them out loud instead. Don’t overdo it and get caught in a vicious cycle, but having others around to check your reality can help to get out of your own head.

Be Kinder to Yourself

The cornerstones of self-care are self-acceptance and self-love. This seems obvious at face value but is often overlooked in day-to-day life.

image

We often engage in a paradox where we like the version of ourselves we have in our own heads while we simultaneously beat ourselves up when we can’t measure up to that constructed ideal.

And while a lot of people think this way, it’s not hard to realize how counterproductive this thinking is to bettering yourself and cultivating self-confidence, if you take a step back.

Instead, show yourself the patience you give others, and cut yourself the same amount of slack. If you can change the fixed idea you have of yourself and believe you’re a constantly changing work in progress, you’ll start to grow and learn from your mistakes rather than torturing yourself by viewing every error you make as a sign of failure and weakness.

Learn to Say “No”

Many of us feel compelled to accept every invitation and spread ourselves thin by juggling a million tasks because it seems easier than turning someone down.

image

But according to psychologists, setting boundaries by saying no from time to time is the best way to keep healthy relationships with ourselves and others. For one, it’ll keep you from feeling overly burned out, stressed and overwhelmed. And saying no will also ultimately help improve your quality of life once you can spend time on yourself rather than worrying about how to get out of your latest commitment.

Interestingly, the inability to say no is often tied to low self-confidence and self-esteem. We might have been conditioned to become people-pleasers to the point where we imagine we’re useless if we’re not being helpful, or that our self-worth depends on how much we do for others.

The first step to taking back control of our lives and our time is to recognize the cycles we’re in and to keep our responses simple. Remember, you never have to ask for permission to say no, and remind yourself that you’re turning down a request, not a person.

Try Out New Coping Strategies

Several of us have our go-to coping mechanisms, the little pick-me-ups that work their magic when seemingly nothing else can. But when people don’t realize the long-term effect of dependence on unhealthy strategies, their physical and mental health can suffer.

image

Drinking to deal with social anxiety is a common coping mechanism that can snowball out of control if it goes unchecked. Negative self-talk and oversleeping also fall into this category of instantaneous feel-goods that work against you in the long run.

So next time you’re tempted to take a “day in” because you’re feeling blue, reconsider your approach. Sure, it feels exhausting to be in the world when you’re feeling depressed, but isolation will only further the depression.

A good rule when you’re feeling down is to do whatever your depression is telling you not to do. Calling friends, picking up groceries, or taking the dog for a long walk will help you feel less sad and worthless.

This and our other tiny tips won’t take much time out of your day, and your mental health will thank you for the adjustments you’ve made later.

16 Things Your Nails Can Say About Your Health

Today, nails are mostly regarded as a purely aesthetic feature of our bodies. In fact, it is estimated that the global nail polish market will reach up to $15.55 billion by 2024. However, it turns out that your nails may not just be a platform of contemporary design but also a mirror of your general health status.

Bright Side found out how exactly the color, texture and other features of your nails can reflect your internal health problems.

The color of your nails

  1. In most cases, yellow nails indicate a fungal infection. If not treated in time, this condition may worsen and your nails may even acquire a greenish tint and become crumbly. Other possible causes of the yellow color include aging, lung issues caused by smoking, and frequent usage of low-quality acrylic nails.
  2. White nails with a strip of pink at the top (or Terry’s nails) can be a sign of congestive heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes, and some liver problems such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. Sometimes Terry’s nails may also be caused by aging.
  3. If your nails are extremely pale, you probably have a nutritional deficiency or a circulation problem that prevents the blood from reaching your fingertips. In severe cases, this may even lead to anemia or an iron deficiency in your blood.
  4. Dark red nails may indicate that you have heart disease. If the redness extends to the sides of your nails and cuticle, this might be a sign of an autoimmune disease called lupus.
  5. Bluish or purple nails usually mean that your body doesn’t get enough oxygen. Among other possible causes are heart issues and lung problems such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
  6. Other colors of your nails may be a sign of various health problems. For example, if your nails turn brown, this may indicate that you have a thyroid disease or nutritional problems. Grey tinted nails are usually caused by taking some prescription drugs like antimalarial pills.

The texture of your nails

  1. Brittle, split nails are usually linked to hypothyroidism, a condition when your thyroid works too slowly. Dry and crumbly nails also may indicate a deficiency in vitamins A, C, and the vitamin B7 also known as biotin. Another possible reason for this nail problem is the overuse of nail polish remover.
  2. Vertical ridges are usually a normal sign of aging, just like wrinkles on your face. But if they become more prominent at a young age, this may mean that you suffer from vitamin B12 or a magnesium deficiency.
  3. Horizontal ridges (or Beau’s lines) are typically the result of direct trauma to your nail. However, if you see them on more than one nail at a time, they may also be a sign of a serious illness with a high fever such as scarlet fever or pneumonia.
  4. Nail pitting may indicate skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. It may also be an early sign of connective tissue disorders including inflammatory arthritis, a disease that affects your joints.

Nail growth

  1. Spoon nails (or koilonychia), a phenomenon when your nails look like a spoon with raised ridges and a scooped out depression, may be a sign of hemochromatosis, a disorder that occurs when your body produces too much iron. They’re also associated with iron-deficiency anemia, heart disease, and poor blood circulation.
  2. Nail clubbing appears when your fingertips become enlarged and your nails become curved downward. This kind of nail growth can be a sign of low oxygen in your blood that is usually caused by lung disease. Clubbing can also be related to liver or kidney disease, heart problems, inflammatory bowel disease, and AIDS.
  3. Nails that are detached from their beds usually indicate hyperthyroidism, a condition when your thyroid gland is releasing too many hormones into your body. Loose nails can also signify a fungal infection, psoriasis, poor blood circulation or amyloidosis, or an excess amount of the protein amyloid in your organs and tissues.

Other nail features

  1. Dark verticle lines extending from the cuticle to the tip of your nail may be a sign of subungual melanoma, a really dangerous type of skin cancer. So even if those lines don’t cause any pain in your nails, it’s better to make an immediate trip to your doctor once you’ve noticed them.
  2. Although most people believe that white stripes (or Mees’ lines) mean calcium deficiency, that’s not actually true. Those white discolorations on your nails usually indicate an imbalanced diet lacking in protein. Besides that, they may appear after an episode of poisoning with heavy metals as a result of kidney failure.
  3. Red, puffy skin around your nail usually indicates inflammation of the nail fold. If the inflammation is accompanied by large swelling, this could be due to an infection called paronychia. Other possible reasons for the reddish nail fold include connective tissue disorders — lupus disease, in particular.

Bonus: How to make your own nail remedy at home

Take 4 oz of jojoba oil, 4 oz of vitamin E oil, 3 oz of avocado oil, 2 oz of grapeseed oil, and 2 oz of sweet almond oil, and mix them well in a nail polish bottle. Apply this mixture to the entire cuticle area and massage it into the skin around your nails. Then rub excess oil into your hands as if it was hand lotion. Repeat the procedure as often as you wish, especially after any contact with water.

This home remedy will help you properly hydrate your nails and cuticle so that the skin around your nails will become much healthier and softer.

The information presented above is for informative purpose only. So if you’ve noticed any of these changes in your nails, don’t forget to consult your doctor first to find out if you actually need any special treatment or not.

7 Benefits of Avocado Seeds That Can Boost Your Health and Beauty

There are so many products that have useful properties that we don’t know about. For example, an avocado seed. How many times have we thrown one away?

Bright Side wants to tell you about the useful properties of avocado seeds and different ways to use them.

Useful properties

Avocado seeds have bactericidal and fungicidal properties. It means that they are able to neutralize different harmful microorganisms. Additionally, seeds contain saponins that boost our metabolism and help our body get rid of “bad” cholesterol. Besides, these products contain calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C.

It’s highly recommended to use avocado seeds as a cosmetic product or a food supplement.

How to prepare avocado seeds?

Before cooking an avocado seed, you have to peel the brown skin off and let the seed dry. Use a grater to grate the skin, then put it in the oven and bake it for about an hour at a low temperature. As for the pit, you can bake it without grating it (for about 2 hours), then peel the skin, and grate the pit’s pulp. It’s not recommended to eat fresh seeds.

How to use avocado seeds as a cosmetic product:

Thanks to their antibacterial effect, avocado seeds deal great with acne, oily hair, and dandruff. They also have a good influence on our skin color and hair health.

Recipes:

  1. A scrub. Mix grated avocado seeds with ground coffee, add sea salt, and apply on your skin with gentle motions.
  2. A drying cream. Mix warm water and the grated seed until the mixture looks like a paste. For a better effect, add a few drops of tea tree oil. Apply the treatment to your pimples only and leave it for 4-6 minutes.
  3. A facial mask. Mix a grated pit with powdered clay, add some water, and apply to your face avoiding applying on the eye area. After 15 minutes, wash your face and apply a moisturizing cream.
  4. A hair rinse. Add 30 fl oz water in a pan with grated avocado seeds. Boil the water at a low temperature for 30 minutes. Filter the mixture and rinse your hair with this water after you wash it.

How to use it as a food supplement:

It’s recommended to consume avocado seeds if you suffer from obesity, atherosclerosis, or experience problems with your blood pressure. You may also eat them if you have inflammation (for example, the flu) or digestive disorders. Grated seeds are usually added to salads, smoothies, and other dishes.

Recipes:

  1. A salad. All kinds of salads taste great with grated avocado seeds but we recommend to mix the seed powder with vegetables and avocado. Cut your favorite vegetables into pieces and add some powder. You can also add eggs, boiled meat, or fish if you want.
  2. A smoothie. Whip 2 cups of almond milk, a banana, celery, spinach, and 1 tsp of avocado seed powder in the blender. By the way, you can use any other recipe you like but keep in mind that avocado seeds are pretty bitter, so it’s better to add something sweet.
  3. A creamy soup. Fry an onion, add the avocado pulp, and 15 fl oz of vegetable broth. Wait until the soup boils and whip it in the blender. Pour the soup into bowls and sprinkle it with grated avocado seeds.

8 Common Foods You Can Use to Eliminate Health Issues

Now that medicine is developing so quickly, medications come in all possible forms and dosages. Whenever we face a health problem, we try to figure out what capsules, tablets, or drops we should take to ease the symptoms. Spinach, turmeric, garlic, and bananas — these products are associated with cooking. However, in many cases, their unique properties make them work just as good as conventional medications.

Here at Bright Side, we want to tell you about the health benefits of some common foods you probably have never heard about.

1. Turmeric

  • This common spice is a good natural antioxidant that protects eye health by fighting free radicals. The curcumin found in turmeric proved itself effective in preventing clouding of the vision and delaying the onset of cataracts. It also protects the eyes against toxins that cause cataracts and prevents the complications people can have after cataract surgery.
  • Studies have shown that curcumin might help reduce symptoms of depression thanks to its antioxidant properties. While the antidepressant effects of turmeric are still being studied, it has been proved that it can influence the mechanisms that cause the development of depression. In particular, curcumin can restore serotonin and dopamine which eventually leads to mood improvement.
  • According to trials, a number of molecules involved in inflammation are successfully inhibited by the curcumin found in turmeric. This anti-inflammatory property makes turmeric effective in relieving pain and swelling, in particular, in patients with arthritis. However, it implies taking turmeric in dosages exceeding the dosage of a spice, so if you plan to use turmeric for medical purposes, consult your doctor first.

2. Banana

  • Banana peel is one of the home remedies you can try to lighten bruised skin and make the bruise heal faster. Apply the peel skin side up on the affected area overnight. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
  • Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin C, and B6, which makes them highly beneficial for heart health. High potassium intake reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and strokes.
  • Bananas will provide good support for your digestive system in case of diarrhea. This fruit will restore the necessary quantity of fiber, potassium, and other elements that are lost during diarrhea and will improve your digestion.
  • Bananas will also help you to remove dryness and itching of the scalp. It will nourish and moisturize the skin by removing flakes and inflammation. Apply mashed banana to your scalp as a DIY nourishing mask.

3. Spinach

  • Thanks to its high content of potassium, magnesium, and other minerals, spinach is recommended for stabilizing blood pressure. Studies have shown that a diet rich in spinach may decrease arterial stiffness and help maintain good cardiovascular health.
  • The vitamin K that is found in spinach is extremely important when it comes to preventing bone fractures. Vitamin K improves bone health and ensures better calcium absorption.
  • Spinach also contains vitamin A in large quantities, which makes it a good product for your skin, hair, and overall beauty. Vitamin A controls the production of oil in the skin pores and hair follicles, preventing extra oil build up. Spinach is also rich in vitamin C which is crucial for building collagen that provides structure to hair and skin.

4. Dill

  • The essential oils found in dill are perfect sedatives and pacifiers which make dill a good insomnia remedy. The flavonoids and vitamin B found in dill maintain production of certain enzymes and hormones that ensure good sleep.
  • What is more, dill is a well-known carminative that forces the excessive gas down through the digestive tract and allows it to safely leave the body.
  • Dill seeds and leaves can be used as natural mouth fresheners. The essential oils that dill contains have good antimicrobial and germicidal properties that can prevent microbial infections in the mouth cavity.

5. Pomegranate

  • Several studies have demonstrated the potential anti-inflammatory properties of pomegranate that are explained by the high contents of antioxidants in this fruit.
  • Other studies have shown the potential of daily intake of pomegranate juice for 2 weeks to lower blood pressure in the patients with hypertension. Regular intake of pomegranate juice is also considered to be helpful for improving blood flow in patients with coronary heart disease.
  • Thanks to the vitamins and minerals that pomegranates contain, the intake of these fruits is capable of increasing hemoglobin concentration and red blood cells count.

6. Beetroot

  • Beetroot is rich in iron, an essential compound of hemoglobin which is crucial for the growth, development, and functioning of cells.
  • Beetroot also contains a whole range of vitamins and elements important for our health, including vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, manganese, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, and many others.
  • Beetroot is a good source of fiber that improves digestive health. Introducing beetroot to your diet can prevent constipation and other digestive conditions.

7. Dark chocolate

  • The cocoa powder that is found in large amounts in dark chocolate has proved itself effective in decreasing the amount of “bad” cholesterol that can damage arteries lining.
  • Studies have shown that dark chocolate intake improves the blood flow to the brain, significantly improving brain function.

8. Garlic

  • Regular intake of garlic (both raw and cooked) can be a good preventive measure against the common cold. Studies have shown that it is capable of reducing the frequency of this ailment in adults thanks to its antiviral and antibacterial properties.
  • Studies have shown that garlic can reduce the risk of heart diseases by lowering blood pressure and reducing the amount of cholesterol in the body.

8 Harmless Products That Ruin Your Health If You Overdose on Them

8 Harmless Products That Ruin Your Health If You Overdose on Them

Everyone knows that any food and any drug can be helpful only if you don’t eat or take too much of it. And if you do, the consequences could be terrible.

Today, Bright Side made a compilation of popular foods and found out which ones can damage your health if you eat too much of them.

Soy sauce

In 2013, a young man from the US made a bet that he could drink a bottle (around 33 oz) of soy sauce. He had a seizure and lost consciousness. Doctors diagnosed him with severe dehydration and an excessive amount of sodium. This imbalance is dangerous because it can cause a stroke.

Tea

In 2014, a 56-year-old man was hospitalized with kidney failure caused by drinking too much cold tea. As it turned out, he drank around 16 cups per day that led to these terrible consequences. His kidneys were damaged by oxalate — a chemical that is present in black tea. In order to avoid these consequences, you shouldn’t drink more than 6 cups of black tea per day.

Nutmeg

If you eat a little nutmeg, it’s perfectly safe, but if you eat more than 2 tbsp, it can cause hallucinations.

Toothpaste

At the beginning of the 90s, all tubes of toothpaste said: “Don’t swallow, don’t use more than a pea-size.” Swallowing a huge amount of fluoride-free toothpaste will most likely just lead to an upset stomach. However, if you swallow a lot of fluoride-containing toothpaste, it can be very dangerous, especially for a child’s body because fluoride is toxic and can cause dizziness, stomachache, and even death.

Soda

Sweet sodas contain a lot of sugar. And sugar is the worst ingredient. According to the latest information, the lethal dose of sugar is 0.5 oz for 1 lb of body weight. So, an average male has to drink 784 oz of soda in order to get poisoned.

Tuna

Many people know that eating a lot of tuna can be dangerous, but few people know what “a lot” really means. Some kinds of tuna contain more mercury than others. So, if a person’s weight is 150 lbs, then they shouldn’t eat more than 0.3 lbs of tuna per 9 days.

Ointment for muscles

This kind of ointment relieves muscle pain, but you shouldn’t use it very often. Despite the fact that it is meant for external use, the methyl salicylate that these ointments contain penetrates the body through the pores and can lead to dangerous consequences.

Licorice

Eating just 0.1 lbs of licorice within 2 weeks can lead to heart problems. The problem is, licorice contains glycyrrhizin — a chemical that leads to a decrease in potassium levels. When the potassium level decreases, your blood pressure can increase which can lead to heart failure.

7 Myths About Health That Were Successfully Debunked by Modern Scientists

Pseudo-scientific myths aren’t easily replaced with solid facts. We’re recommended to take at least 10,000 steps every day, buy gluten-free food, and drink liquids only 30 minutes after lunch. However, all these beliefs have no scientific support.

Bright Side found 7 widespread misconceptions that we used to believe were scientific facts.

1. Gluten is bad for your health.

Scientists compared more than 650 gluten-free products with their regular equivalents and they found out that gluten-free products contain more calories, sugar, fat, and less protein. There are people who have to eat gluten-free foods due to their allergies or if they suffer from celiac disease. Gluten can cause harm to their small intestine (approximately 1 out of 100 people suffer from this disease). For healthy people, limiting the number of whole-grain foods in one’s diet might increase the risk of the development of heart disease.

2. Activated charcoal helps treat a hangover.

Hangover symptoms appear when the alcohol in your liver turns into toxic acetaldehyde and then the latter gets into your bloodstream. Activated charcoal absorbs the toxins inside your body and promotes their quick disposal through the intestines. However, it’s only effective during the first hour after poisoning. It’s a pretty pointless idea to try to use charcoal early in the morning.

To ease a headache, you can take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, Diclofenac, and Naproxen (don’t take Paracetamol: it doesn’t mix well with alcohol), and drink a lot of water.

3. There are negative-calorie foods.

Celery, grapefruit, broccoli, tomatoes, and cucumbers are called negative-calorie foods, but there is no scientific proof to back up this fact. Despite them being low in calories (from 7 to 30 calories per 100 g), your body needs less energy than usual. It can be explained by the fact that these products contain a lot of water and fiber that don’t require much energy to be digested.

4. You shouldn’t drink while eating.

All the water that you drink while eating helps wash pieces of food down the esophagus to the stomach. It also breaks up big lumps of food and delivers acids and ferments to it. The water dilutes the secretion of the gastric juice but it doesn’t interfere with the work of the stomach. The latter regulates the concentration of the gastric juice; a glass of water would only help you digest your food properly.

5. Bar soap transmits bacteria.

No soap transmits bacteria. Even if a person with the Ebola virus used a bar of soap, it will still be safe for you to use it. A group of scientists conducted an experiment: they placed bacteria on a bar of soap, washed their hands, and gave the bar to another participant of the experiment. As the result, they didn’t find any bacteria on the participants’ hands.

6. Antiperspirants are dangerous.

Antiperspirants are only effective when an aluminum salt blocks the pores that the sweat comes out of. In the ’60s, it was widely believed that aluminum can cause Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association claims that studies haven’t proven that aluminum plays any role in the development of the disease; therefore, there’s no point in getting rid of antiperspirants.

People also used to believe that antiperspirants might cause kidney diseases. This myth was debunked by scientists from the National Kidney Foundation. They explain that it’s impossible to absorb so much aluminum through the skin to actually damage the kidneys.

Also, aluminum and parabens in antiperspirants were blamed for the development of breast cancer. This myth was also debunked by specialists from the National Cancer Institute.

7. You need to take at least 10,000 steps every day.

10,000 steps is a random number that was made up by the Japanese to promote a new step counter in the mid-1960s. A sharp increase in activity might have negative consequences for people with chronic diseases, the elderly, people with diabetes, or those who got used to a sedentary lifestyle. Some studies prove that to stay fit and healthy, you need to take from 5,000 to 8,000 steps every day. Scientists tried to count an exact necessary number and claim that it’s advised to take at least 7,500 steps per day.

Do you know any pseudo-scientific facts? Let’s debunk them together! Share your knowledge and ask questions in the comments.

15 Celebrities Who Weren’t Broken by Serious Health Issues

When we look at photos of different celebrities, we sometimes think that their lives are a constant party. But this isn’t true at all because even the most successful people on our planet are just regular guys with their own problems. And they also have health issues. For example, Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has been living with diabetes for almost 30 years and Khloé Kardashian has been diagnosed with skin cancer. It’s incredible that people with such serious conditions keep on creating things and overcoming different obstacles.

We at Bright Side will tell you who among famous people encountered incurable diseases but didn’t give up and continued their life paths.

Halle Berry and Tom Hanks: Diabetes

  • Almost 30 years ago, on the set of Living Dolls, there was a tragic situation. Halle Berry was only at the beginning of her acting career back then. She went into a coma. The girl was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with diabetes. In one of her interviews, the actress said that it took her a long time to accept her condition. She learned about it at the age of 23.

According to the actress, she had to go through a long recovery period after every big event with alcohol, desserts, and other different foods. This was when she decided to start taking care of her health. She hasn’t been drinking alcohol for many years now and she follows a very healthy lifestyle. This allows the 52-year-old woman look 15 years younger than she really is. She became a mother at the age of 42.

  • Tom Hanks was in the same situation. For more than 20 years, the actor had been fighting high sugar level but his lifestyle with a lot of stress and sleep deprivation did the trick. For example, Tom lost 55 lb for Castaway and gained 30 lb for A League of Their Own.

In October 2013, Tom Hanks admitted on David Letterman’s show that he was diagnosed with diabetes. Having learned about his conditions, the actor decided to give up his old habits to be able to star in movies for as long as possible.

Pamela Anderson: Hepatitis C

Pamela Anderson was diagnosed with Hepatitis C back in 2002. According to Pamela, she got it in the ’90s from her husband when they used the same needle for tattoos. The actress has been treating the disease for 13 years. In 2015, Pamela Anderson said that thanks to a new experimental treatment, she managed to fully recover.

Tom Cruise: Dyslexia

Tom Cruise’s childhood was not an easy one. The future actor comes from a family of many children. He went through his parent’s divorce when he was a teenager and at the age of 14, he had already changed 15 schools. But the hardest challenge of all for Cruise was his incurable disease — dyslexia.

Dyslexia and dysgraphia made him the most bullied student in school. It was really hard for the boy to read and he could barely write. So, he was known as an idiot in every school he went to. But this hard time was something that helped Tom Cruise discover his acting talent. Yes, he was a failure in class, but he could completely transform in school plays.

We think that now Tom Cruise doesn’t have any problems reading scripts and contracts because he can hire people to do it.

Angelina Jolie and Shannen Doherty: Mastectomy

  • In summer 2015, Shannen Doherty filed a lawsuit against her former manager. According to the lawsuit, the manager made a mistake in the medical insurance papers so Shannen didn’t get the treatment on time and her breast cancer spread to her lymph nodes.

Shannen has been fighting cancer for almost 4 years now. In order to slow down the development of the disease, the actress has undergone several chemotherapy courses, radiotherapy, and a mastectomy. Recently, the actress said she was in remission — this is the state when the tumor is under control and is treatable.

Michael J. Fox: Parkinson’s disease

The public learned about Michael J. Fox’s condition in 1998. At that time, the actor told his colleagues that at the beginning of the ’90s, he was diagnosed with a neurological disorder — Parkinson’s disease. When the actor first went to see a doctor because of a twitching pinky finger, experts told him that he would have 10 years of active life at the most.

After this, the Back to the Future star decided to take a break from his career and take care of his health. Michael J. Fox wrote 3 biographical books where he told in great detail about what it means to fight Parkinson’s disease and he also founded a charity organization. This organization managed to collect $350 million for research of this disease.

Sarah Hyland: Kidney dysplasia

The star of Modern Family, Sarah Hyland, has had a medical condition since childhood. At the age of 9, Sarah was diagnosed with a very unpleasant condition — kidney dysplasia. For more than 10 years, the girl had been fighting the disease, but in 2012, she had to have a kidney transplantation from her father.

The transplantation improved Sarah’s condition but didn’t treat her completely. Because of not feeling well, the girl rarely shows up at public events and the fans of her character often notice the changes in her appearance. On her Instagram page, the girl shares her problems with the subscribers: from losing weight to always having a swollen face.

Michael Phelps: Hyperactivity and ADHD

American swimmer Michael Phelps, the only 23 times Olympic champion in the history of the sport, had a really difficult path to success, accompanied by hyperactivity and ADHD. This neurological disorder started to develop when Michael was a child. The main symptoms are difficulties concentrating and the inability to finish what you started. In his interview, the Phelps’ coach tells that the swimmer sometimes forgot the way to the dressing room and their training was sometimes a nightmare.

However, thanks to the efforts of the swimmer and the people around him, Phelps managed to achieve unbelievable success in sports. Now, Michael Phelps is going through quite a rough period. After the end of his career, the Olympic champion lost his motivation and is now fighting depression.

Mila Kunis: Partial blindness

For many years, one of the most popular actresses of today had one blind eye. The reason for the blindness was iritis. Because of the inflammation, the actress had blurry vision and she couldn’t focus on anything. Mila Kunis didn’t see a specialist for a long time but in 2010, she had a surgery where she had her lens replaced. By the way, Mila’s condition was kept a secret up until she had her vision back after the surgery.

Hugh Jackman and Khloé Kardashian: Skin cancer

  • In 2013, Hugh Jackman (who played Wolverine) was diagnosed with skin cancer. Since then, the actor has not only had several chemotherapy treatments but also 6 skin transplantation surgeries. His diagnosis is basal-cell carcinoma. It is a kind of an oncological skin disease when a tumor develops on the lower layer of the epidermis. The carcinoma appears on the parts of the skin which are often exposed to the sun, for example, on the nose. On his Twitter, Hugh Jackman easily shares the facts from his life with his subscribers.
  • The youngest of the Kardashian sisters, Khloé, is also very honest with her subscribers. It is proved not only by the show she has been on for more than 10 years but also her posts on social media. In one of her posts, she told that in 2008, she was diagnosed with a tumor on her skin. The doctors had to transplant about 7 in of her skin. Thanks to the specialist, the development of the disease was stopped.

Daniel Radcliffe: Dyspraxia

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who is famous for his role of Harry Potter, revealed that he has a rare incurable disease — dyspraxia. This is a brain function disorder that makes you unable to do the actions you need to do correctly.

Radcliffe’s condition doesn’t let him write correctly or tie his shoelaces. When he was a child, he really struggled in school — and not because of his acting career, but because he was unable to learn. According to Daniel, dyspraxia was the main reason he chose to pursue this career.

Yolanda Hadid: Lyme disease

When the new book by Yolanda Hadid appeared on the shelves of bookstores, the entire world learned how the life of this woman changed after she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012. In her book, the mother of 2 famous models revealed how she fought not only the disease itself but also her suicidal thoughts, as the symptoms of this disease also impact the quality of life. It causes constant headaches, light sensitivity, muscle pain, fever, and a rash.

Thanks to a long period of treatment, Yolanda is in remission now.

Prince Charles: Alzheimer’s disease

In September 2018, many media sources published information about InTouch having a secret medical report. The document said that Prince Charles had had Alzheimer’s disease for several years already. And his health is getting worse with every day. The first mentions of Charles’ disease appeared in 2011 when he was close to missing his older son’s wedding.

The sources close to the Royal family say that Prince William will be the next King.

This article was written not to tell about the problems of famous people but in order to let everyone who has serious trouble know that there is always hope. And the way we live, what we do, and how society sees us depends mostly on us. Love, create, and be happy no matter what!

12 Shower Mistakes That Affect Your Health

According to statistics, all of us spend about 1.5 years of our lives in the bathroom. And we spend about 6 months taking a shower. There is nothing surprising about this fact because hygiene plays a huge role in our lives. But few people know that there are some things that we do wrong in the shower.

Bright Side has collected 12 most popular mistakes that everyone makes when taking a shower.

Mistake № 1. We don’t take a shower after a workout.

Some people think that the only reason why they should take a shower right after a workout is the smell. But in fact, there are other reasons: sweating stimulates the production of bacteria on your skin that can cause a rash. So, we recommend you to take a shower as soon as possible.

Mistake № 2. We shave our legs before having a pedicure done.

Don’t shave your legs before having a pedicure done. You might get an infection through the little scratches on your feet.

Mistake № 3. We don’t take contrast showers.

Right before you finish taking a shower, turn on the cold water for 30 seconds. This will increase your stress resistance, make your immune system stronger, and work as an anti-depressant. But don’t forget that taking a contrast shower right before you sleep might lead to insomnia.

Mistake № 4. We take a shower and wash our hair every day.

People who have thin or weak hair should avoid washing it every day. The best cadence for washing hair is twice a week so the moisture in the hair stays balanced.

Also, don’t forget that taking a shower too often irritates and dehydrates the skin since the water washes off the good bacteria. This can lead to the increase of chances of having a skin infection.

Mistake № 5. We wrap our wet hair in a towel.

After getting wet, our hair becomes really vulnerable and easy to break. In order to avoid this, it is recommended to not wrap the hair with a towel after taking a shower. Also, because of the heat, the sebaceous glands start functioning more actively which makes the hair look less clean and tidy.

Mistake № 6. We forget about cleaning the shower head.

If you have been using a shower head for a long time, you might notice some kind of plaque on it that can be dangerous for your health. Scientists found that there can be bacteria on shower heads that can cause lung diseases.

Mistake № 7. We don’t use the soap dish correctly.

If you have a soap dish in your bathroom, make sure the water drains from it. Otherwise, the bacteria can reproduce right on the bar of soap.

Mistake № 8. We leave our razor in the shower.

Mistake № 9. We use the same towel for too long.

Don’t use the same towel for a long time. If you use a towel that is not completely dry, there can be bacteria on it. Microbiologist Philip Tierno recommends using the same towel no more than 3 times before washing it.

Mistake № 10. We don’t wash the bathtub right after taking a shower.

Don’t forget to wash the bathtub right after taking a shower. The humid environment stimulates the reproduction of bacteria like E. coli. Washing the bathtub regularly can prevent an infection.

Mistake № 11. We leave our sponge in the shower.

By leaving a sponge in the shower, you let different bacteria reproduce faster in the wet conditions. So, it’s best to make sure the sponge is clean and store it in a dry area.

Mistake № 12. We don’t wash our feet.

Some people don’t wash their feet while taking a shower believing that the soap and water travel down the body and the feet get washed this way. Unfortunately, it’s not true and if you don’t wash your feet carefully, you might get a toenail fungus.

We hope that these pieces of advice are useful for you because there is nothing more valuable than health. Do you have some other tips that you would like to share with us? Tell us in the comment section below.
