27 Motivational Quotes That Won't Make You Roll Your Eyes

image

Whether you’ve got the Sunday blues or are struggling to get over that Wednesday slump, you might be looking for some words of encouragement to make the rest of the week feel less a pointless drag.

And while you can surely find a repository of Winston Churchill quotes that will make you scoff and roll your eyes — because what could a dead, white British politician have said sixty years ago that would resonate with my life today? — what follows are not those quotes.

From the most encouraging movie moments to motivational celebrity tweets, here are 27 inspirational quotes that will (I promise) make your week so much better. And if you’ve got a friend going through the mud, send them these encouraging quotes, too. After all, what’s more uplifting than sharing a good laugh?

1.  “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” —Dita Von Teese

2.  “Be as good as your dog thinks you are, as rich as your kids think you are, and as handsome as your mother thinks you are.” —Unknown

3.  “All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,

A light from the shadows shall spring;

Renewed shall be blade that was broken,

The crownless again shall be king.”

—J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

4. “There are two rules to success: Never tell everyone everything you know” —Roger H. Lincoln

5. “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” —Michael Jordan

11. “Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there’s the superhero and there’s the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn’t become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red ‘S,’ that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears — the glasses, the business suit — that’s the costume. That’s the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He’s weak… he’s unsure of himself… he’s a coward. How Much Can You Trust Your Eyes?

Having an accurate eye is an ability we use to measure the distance to objects as well as the distance between them, and compare their sizes and shapes. The accuracy of our eyes grows with experience and is usually developed better in people who often rely on their eyes at work. Additionally, perfectionists can have really sharp eyesight. Are you used to trusting your eyes and are you sure that they never cheat you? Our test is going to show you that this is either true or false.

Bright Side has prepared some unusual tasks for you. You’ll have to look very carefully at some of the pictures.

1. In which circle is the triangle located right in the middle?

Press the image to find the answer.

2. The cell of which color is located in the very center?

9 Tips to Help You Heal Dry Eyes

According to the National Health Service, 1 in 3 people experiences dry eyes at least once during their lifetime. Dry eyes usually occur when the eyes don’t produce enough tears to stay hydrated or because the tears evaporate too quickly. This usually happens due to hormonal changes, activities, environmental changes, contact lenses, or certain medications. Thankfully there are various natural ways to treat dry eyes without resorting to any medications.

Here at Bright Side, we compiled a list of natural home remedies that can help you treat dry eyes within a few days.

1. Get a humidifier

An unhealthy environment is the main cause of dry eyes in most cases, so a humidifier is the answer to your problem. A humidifier adds moisture to the room in which it is placed and with more moisture in the air, the tears from your eyes will evaporate a lot slower thus keeping your eyes more comfortable. It is important however to ventilate the area by opening up the windows when you are not in the room to prevent mold from building up. In addition, if you live or work in a dusty environment, consider getting an air filter for cleaner air.

2. Try a warm compress

Tears are mainly made of oil, water, and mucus in equal amounts. When your eyes become irritated and inflamed, the eyes then stop the production of oil in the eyelid glands thus resulting in dry eyes. An easy way to alleviate the irritation caused by this is by using a warm compress on the eyelids for a few minutes. The moisture from the warm cloth will help to loosen the clogged oils in the glands and alleviate the discomfort as well.

  • Wet a clean washcloth with warm water.
  • Squeeze the excess water out and place it over your eyelids for 5 minutes.
  • Gently press it over your eyelids.
  • Repeat daily for a week to reduce inflammation.

3. Drink more water

Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is the most important factor for a healthier lifestyle. It ensures the normal function of almost all of our organs, including our eyes. Water helps the eyes to stay hydrated, it ensures that they produce enough tears, and it prevents them from drying out.

  • It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Don’t wait until you are thirsty to sip some water because you might already be dehydrated. Have a bottle of water by your side at all times and sip regularly.

4. Adjust your computer screen

If you use your computer regularly, make sure that the computer monitor is correctly positioned to minimize eye strain. It should stand at eye level or slightly below it but no more or less than that. In addition, staring at a computer screen limits the number of times you blink every minute, according to a recent study, people who stare at their computer blink 3 times less than people who don’t.

  • Adjust both your screen monitor and the brightness of the screen to a level that feels comfortable.

  • Take regular breaks while working. Take a 10-minute break every hour and do something that doesn’t involve staring at a screen.

5. Keep your eyes clean

Good hygiene is key when treating dry eyes, particularly if you’ve been suffering from dry eyes for a long time. By cleaning your eyelids, especially the lid margins, you are essentially removing debris that can build up over time and clog the oil-producing glands in the eyes. When it comes to hygiene there are 3 steps you need to follow in order to keep your eyes clean and prevent them from drying out:

  • Fill a bowl with boiling hot water and allow it to cool down and become warm.
  • Add a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda (baking soda).
  • Dip a clean cotton pad into the solution and wipe your eyelids and eyelashes.
  • Repeat this process using a clean cotton pad each time.
  • Do this every day for a week.

6. Apply cucumber slices

We’ve all seen it and wondered why many people in movies apply cucumbers over their eyes during their pampering routines, and now our questions are finally answered. Studies have shown that cucumbers can reduce swelling around the eyes, hydrate them, and unclog oil-producing glands in the eyes. Due to their high water content, they can moisturize the eyes and penetrate the skin in order to keep it hydrated while relieving dry eyes.

  • Get 2 fresh slices of cucumber and apply them over your eyes.
  • Keep them there for 15 minutes, until the cucumber slices start to get dry.
  • Repeat twice a week.

7. Double up on Omega-3s

There is no doubt that Omega-3 fatty acids have many positive effects on health in general. The molecules in Omega-3s make-up parts of the cell membrane and they play a crucial role in fighting inflammation and promoting the production of natural oil in the eye glands.

According to studies that are currently conducted in ophthalmology, they have found that there is a significant improvement in patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome and who have incorporated Omega-3s into their diets.

  • You can take supplements.
  • Or, incorporate it into your diet through foods that are rich in Omega-3s like salmon, tuna, flaxseeds, chia seeds, soybeans, canola oil, etc…

8. Try out castor oil drops

Castor oil is the only type of oil that works as a water retainer, which makes it an ideal medicine for dry eyes because it can prevent tear evaporation. By applying castor oil to dry eyes you will be able to get instant relief and reduce discomfort.

Castor oil creates a soothing feeling for irritated eyes as well. It reduces the burning sensation, redness, and swelling that is caused by dry eyes. Due to its antibacterial properties, castor oil can also treat eye infections and prevent bacteria from entering the eye.

  • Right before bedtime, while you are lying down, apply 1-3 drops of castor oil into each eye.
  • While your eyes are closed, massage the oil into your eyes for a couple of minutes
  • Do NOT apply contact lenses for at least 12 hours after you’ve applied castor oil, this can irritate your eyes even more.
  • Repeat every night right before bed for a week.

9. Eat some grapes

In research conducted by the National Institute of Health it was found that in people who ate grapes and had symptoms of dry eyes, their symptoms decreased significantly after a week of consuming grapes. This research suggests that a diet enriched with grapes can moisturize the eyes and can protect the retina from deterioration while also providing excellent eye care. In addition to that, grapes decrease inflammatory protein levels and reduce oxidative stress in the system due to their high antioxidant content.

  • The recommended allowance of grapes is approximately one cup a day. Which is not much at all considering the various health benefits they offer.

Have you tried any of these methods? What is your experience with dry eyes? Please let us know in the comments below.

10 Facts About Medicine That Can Open Your Eyes

The human body, as well as the world of medicine, will never stop surprising us. Who could ever think that the first tests for pregnancy already existed in Ancient Egypt? It also turns out that scientists have a perfect sense of humor, otherwise, they wouldn’t have named a protein found in the retina after Pikachu the Pokémon.

Bright Side compiled a set of curious medical facts, some of which can become a true discovery for you. Don’t miss our bonus at the end of the article — it will tell you about 5 benefits of putting a wet cotton ball in your navel.

The first pregnancy test appeared in Ancient Egypt.

According to the information that scientists have about Ancient Egypt, the medicine of this country was surprisingly well-developed. The doctors in The New Kingdom (the middle of the 16th — 3rd quarter of the 11th century B.C.) were already aware of a method used to spot pregnancy at early stages. They even tried to determine the gender of the baby.

According to a papyrus that is stored in the Carlsberg Laboratory in Denmark, in order to find out whether a woman was pregnant, the following actions had to be performed: place barley grain and wheat grain mixed with dates and sand into 2 separate sacks and wet them with the woman’s urine daily. Sprouted grains indicated pregnancy. If it was only the barley that sprouted, it meant the woman was supposed to have a baby boy; if it was only wheat grains that sprouted, it was a baby girl. If the grains didn’t sprout, the woman wasn’t pregnant.

Initially, there were only living people in morgues.

In the 16th century, a morgue was a place of “exhibiting faces” and those faces were alive. Initially, morgue ( translated from Old-French as — ’to look at solemnly, to defy’) was a sector in prisons where guards would examine newly-arrived prisoners in order to remember their faces. Later those sections were used for storing corpses of unknown people so that passersby could see and recognize them.

The placebo effect can work even when a patient is aware that they are taking a “dummy” pill.

According to research conducted among people suffering from anxiety disorders in the USA, patients well-being improved even when they knew that they were not taking real medicine. Scientists came to the conclusion that this thing could be explained by the faith of patients in the method itself.

There is an existing concept of “impossible color”

Impossible or forbidden colors are combinations of frequencies of visible light that can’t be perceived by the human eye under normal conditions. The thing is that there are 3 types of color receptors that are used when perceiving a color and due to their specifics, a human brain is not able to perceive the combinations of opponent colors: red and green, blue and yellow.

However, under some special conditions, a human can see the impossible color and we have a picture for you that proves it. Try looking at the cross in the middle of the green circle for 20 seconds and then shift your eyes to the same cross in the white square. You’ll see a light pink circle in it.

The most wide-spread color of human eyes is brown but, in fact, all people have blue eyes.

Only 17% of people on Earth have blue eyes, while brown is the most popular eye color. At the same time, the eyes of most babies have a bluish tinge apart from babies with dark skin. The front layer of the iris of a newborn baby doesn’t have pigment, and the color isn’t considered permanent until the age of 11.

To put it simply, all people are initially blue-eyed and even brown eyes are actually blue — the color is simply hidden behind the layer of the brown pigment. By the way, there is a surgery that can transform brown eyes into blue eyes and the result is irreversible because the brown pigment is removed with a laser and can’t be restored.

There is a protein called Pikachurin in the retina and it was named after Pikachu the Pokémon.

In 2008, Japanese scientists found out that there is a protein in the retina of the eye that is responsible for transmitting visual signals from the eyes to the brain. It turns out, that without this ’fast as lightning’ protein, the process of transmitting would take 3 times longer. That’s why it was decided to name it after Pikachu — the most popular Pokémon who possesses “electrical” abilities.

As a rule, it’s not blood as a whole, but its products that are used for transfusion.

Perhaps, you have seen many episodes in movies and TV series where blood is directly transfused from one person to another with the help of a special device. In real life, this procedure is not performed anymore — today’s approach consists of component transfusion when it’s only blood products that are used. For example, plasma, leukocytes, erythrocytes, or platelet mass and other components.

A human has much more than 5 senses.

Apart from the main senses, humans have other senses as well. For example:

  • The sense of balance – the ability to keep balance and a sense of body movement in terms of acceleration and change of direction.
  • Proprioception, or the sense of space — the ability to spot different parts of your body relative to other body parts. This sense helps us go upstairs without looking at the stairs. People with bad proprioception can be clumsy.
  • Stereognosis — the ability to recognize a subject by touch with closed eyes.
  • 2-dimensional feeling  in order to understand how it works, close your eyes and ask someone to write something on your skin (not with a pen, of course, but with a fingertip). You’ll probably be able to understand what exactly was written on you or at least you’ll recognize separate letters.
  • Muscle and joint senses help you stay aware of what position your legs and arms are in at the moment.
  • The sense of localization helps to spot the place you are touched at.
  • The sense of pressure determines the difference between a light touch and a heavy pressing.

There is a deepening on your hand that is called anatomical snuff box.

Here is a funny thing — a small deepening that can be seen on the hands of most people has its own name — anatomical snuff box. It was named after the bad habit of snuffing tobacco. This habit was widespread both among ladies and gentlemen from the elite society and among simple people in the 18th-19th centuries. It’s easy to guess that tobacco was placed right into this deepening and then it was snuffed with the nose. The habit has gone, but the name has stayed.

One of the reasons for the invention of the stethoscope was the big breasts of one of the patients of doctor René Laennec.

French doctor and anatomist René Laennec invented the stethoscope in 1816 after he couldn’t hear the heart of a young lady with “significant fatty tissue” ( that’s how the doctor himself described it) in the area of her chest. In other words, the lush breasts of the patient prevented him from diagnosing her because, in those times, hearts and lungs were listened to by putting an ear to the chest of a patient.

But the doctor didn’t give up and remembered one acoustic phenomenon — if you put your ear to one side of a log, you will be able to hear the touch of a needle to the other end. So Laennec took a piece of paper, rolled it into a narrow cylinder, and was finally able to hear the heart of the big-breasted young lady with the help of this simple device. Later the doctor improved his device — you can see it in the photo, and in the 20th century, thanks to other specialists, the stethoscope got its modern look.

Bonus: 5 ailments that a wet cotton ball can treat

Though this technique is not proven scientifically, it is still widely used in folk medicine. You can treat up to 5 ailments by simply placing a wet cotton ball, moistened with different substances, in the navel:

  • putting cotton moistened with almond oil to the navel will improve the condition of your skin all over the body;
  • cotton moistened with coconut and olive oil will improve fertility;

How Sharp Are Your Eyes?

It’s said that the ancient Arabs used to check their eyesight with the help of stars. They had to look up at the night sky and find the Great Bear. If they could see a small star in the dipper’s handle, their eyesight was considered to be good. You can also use this method today. We invite you to take some interesting tests that can challenge your eyes even in the middle of the day.

Bright Side wants to test your attention. Can you find the hidden items in the following images?

Let’s start with an easy task: Find the flower amongst these tangerines.

There’s a button in these candies.

Can you see a raisin in these coffee beans?

Find the bean grain that wants to be a pebble.

Find the spring amongst the steel.

A pomegranate seed can resemble a semi-precious stone.

Can you find the lollipop among the Christmas balls?

Find a blueberry among the grapes…

…and a wild strawberry among the raspberries.

Can you manage to find a green grasshopper in these green leaves?

Bonus: Find a different letter.

How much time did it take you to find all the hidden items? Do you think you’re up to solving more difficult ones?
