15 Backstage Facts About Famous Movies Most Viewers Don’t Know About

A regular viewer will never even realize half of what is happening on the set of famous movies. What do you think the creators of The Matrix were inspired by when they came up with the green running symbols on the screen? Or what irreversible thing did Kurt Russell do on the set of The Hateful Eight?

Bright Side has learned some backstage secrets of Hollywood movies and wants to share them with you right now.

  • In Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts was completely against taking part in nude scenes. But the director of the movie found a way out and in some scenes, Julia was replaced by professional dancer Shelley Michelle. More than that, on the poster of the movie, we are actually seeing only Julia’s head, the rest of her body belongs to her stunt double. By the way, on the poster, Richard Gere has brown hair and in the movie, it’s already grey.
  • In Titanic, the shooting of a rather small scene at dinner on the first class deck took almost 2 days. The thing is, there were a lot of important details in the episode, a lot of close-up shots, glances, and short lines. On the second day, the actors started making faces and laughing and Leonardo DiCaprio looked at the utensils and asked Kathy Bates if she knew which of the forks was used for a lobotomy.
  • Do you remember the scene with chest hair removal from The 40-Year-Old-Virgin? Steve Carell had to experience this procedure for real. The director thought that the emotions at this moment had to be real: he shot the scene in one take using 5 cameras at once to make sure everything worked the way it should.
  • In order to show one of The Hangover characters lose his tooth, the creators didn’t have to use really complex makeup techniques. For some reason, Ed Helms never had that one tooth, so in certain scenes, he just had to remove his implant.
  • How was it possible that Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, the first Guy Ritchie movie done by a director nobody knew back then, managed to get the worldwide famous singer Sting? The wife of the singer Trudie Styler is the head of a production agency. Once, Trudie saw a short movie called The Hard Case. She loved it so much that she risked investing her money into shooting a full movie and even managed to convince her husband to take part in the future movie. This was how Sting appeared in the small but memorable role as the bar owner and father of the main character. And this movie made Guy Ritchie one of the most famous directors of our modern day.
  • In Inside Out, the creators left an interesting Easter Egg: all the characters have the same eye color as their emotions except for Joy and Sadness: they both have blue eyes. By doing this, the creators wanted to highlight the fact that Joy and Sadness always go together.
  • The director of The Shining, Stanley Kubrick, was famous for being a perfectionist. So, instead of the 17 weeks he planned to spend shooting the movie, he ended up spending 51 weeks. For example, the dialogue scene between Shelley Duvall and Jack Nicholson was shot 127 times, and in order to shoot the “Here’s Johnny” scene, they only needed 3 days and 60 doors.

By the way, in order to shoot this scene, they used special light doors that Jack Nicholson (who used to work as a firefighter) broke way too easily. So, for the next takes, they had to get heavier and more sturdy doors.

  • In the movie Unthinkable, the creators decided to not overcomplicate things in order to show how to defuse a bomb under pressure: in the movie, they used Microsoft Excel to do it. Amazing!
  • In one of his interviews, the production and concept designer of The Matrix, Simon Whiteley, revealed his inspiration for creating the famous green lines of code on the screens. It was simple: he used the Japanese hieroglyphics from his wife’s cook books.
  • In one of the scenes of The Hateful Eight, Kurt Russel’s character breaks a guitar. The Martin Museum offered a rare guitar that was made in 1870 especially for this scene and there were several replicas made. It was assumed that there would be a replica used in the scene and that Russel wouldn’t break the original. But something went wrong and the actor was not warned about the value of this guitar. So, during shooting he, according to the script, completely destroyed the guitar. As a result, the museum said they would never lend out any more guitars for shooting any more movies.
  • In Shawshank Redemption, it took 9 hours to shoot the first conversation between Andy and Red. During this time, actor Morgan Freeman just kept playing with the ball and never complained even once, but the next day he came in with a bandaged arm. And this scene was not the only one that required a lot of takes.

The director of the movie wasn’t great at explaining exactly what he didn’t like, so there was a lot of arguing on the set. During one of these arguments, Freeman said he would not do second takes without an explanation.

  • In the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, you can see Voldemort’s snake Nagini moving on the logo of Warner Bros. Pictures. It was done for a reason: the snake appears in one of the first scenes of the movie.
  • The artist Margaret Keane, who the movie Big Eyes is about, was in one of its scenes. She portrayed a woman sitting on a bench and reading a book behind the back of the main character. You can see the photo where the actress Amy Adams and the artist are together right at the end of the move, before the main credits.
  • The budget of Dallas Buyers Club was relatively small. For example, there was only $250 for the makeup during the entire shooting process. What is more interesting is that Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews, who worked as makeup artists on the set, received an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
  • In The Greatest Showman, there is an interesting Easter Egg in the opening credits. We can see a picture of Wolverine’s claws. The main character in this movie was portrayed by Hugh Jackman — the best Wolverine ever.

8 Things Most Instagram Fitness Models Don’t Talk About

Many of us get hypnotized while looking through the perfect pictures fitness models post in their social media accounts. Whether we want to or not, we compare ourselves to them, often feeling guilty for eating junk food or hitting the gym less than they do. It turns out, however, that there is a whole list of tricks Instagram models use to make us believe they know how to get the perfect body.

Here at Bright Side, we tried to learn what tricks hide behind these ideal pictures of fitness models and we can’t wait to tell you what we’ve found out.

1. Their pictures may be edited.

Karina Irby, a bikini model and designer, promotes body positivity by posting her unedited pictures. Now and then she posts collages showing the differences between a real body and a photoshopped one. “I feel like it’s so important to keep educating people on social media to remember that sometimes not everything is how it may seem. Girls can develop these unrealistic expectations of what they think is beautiful and achievable,” Karina said about retouched pictures.

Many fitness models cheat by posting their retouched pics in social media accounts, making their followers compare themselves to “perfect” people. The campaign for unedited pictures showing people the way they are has recently gained popularity. Body-positive models promote self-love and acceptance and try to tell people how important it is to respect yourself the way you are.

2. Poses and angles make all the difference.

Ideal pictures that fitness models post are carefully selected, even though it may not seems that way at first sight. Trainer Jen Widerstorm proved this by posting a collage of pictures taken 2 minutes apart. In one part of the collage she sits and her stomach seems to roll over her pants, while in the other part she stands and her stomach looks perfect. “We all look like this when we sit. Don’t stress about the way your body looks in certain positions,” says Jen.

3. They work hard on their “spontaneous” photos.

A working model Rebecca Pearson made headlines when she confessed that she was deliberately creating the image of a perfect life on Instagram to get a job. She revealed the truth about a few of her popular snaps. One of these pics shows Rebecca leaping spontaneously but in fact, it took her boyfriend half an hour and 300 takes to get that perfect “spontaneous” snap.

4. They may lie about their perfect shape.

Another picture of Rebecca shows her sitting on a chair, stretching her leg and showing off her ideal belly with ripped abs. The truth is, however, that she never had that toned stomach and it was all about her pose and the lighting. “Never mind that I don’t even have a 1-pack — this was Instagram gold! Predictably, as so many people love a #fitspiration tag, I got tons of likes and comments like ‘ABS GIRL!’ and ‘WASHBOARD’, which made me feel a bit guilty,” confessed Rebecca.

5. Their detox beverages may be faked.

Fitness models post tons of pictures of “healthy superfoods” they eat to look gorgeous and we often buy it. The truth is that they may only post it, but never actually eat or drink them — they may even fake those superfoods. This is true about this picture of a wellness smoothie that consisted of rhubarb, beetroot leaves, parsnip, and kale. “After taking 2 sips I heaved, threw it down the sink and had to make do with peanut butter on toast and some chocolate for dinner — a not-so aspirational meal that I didn’t publicize,” said Rebecca Pearson, a model who posted this on her Instagram account.

6. They don’t actually work out when they tell you they do.

Another way of cheating used by fitness models is posting pics of their workouts that don’t actually take place. The model confessed, “As a fun post, I decided to get a shot of me doing yoga, Dostoevsky in hand, with the hashtag #dostoyflexy. I didn’t do any exercise on that day (nor did I ever smile like this whilst reading that book), I just donned the workout gear for the 5 minutes it took to take the photo.”

7. Their “ideal” pictures only show the chosen moments of their lives.

When we look through the models’ Instagram accounts, their bodies and lives, in general, seem ideal. We should remember, however, that what we see is just a collection of carefully chosen pictures showing just one (the most attractive) side of their lives. “Me 1% of the time vs 99% of the time. And I love both photos equally. Good or bad angles don’t change your worth,” says a personal trainer Anna Victoria in a caption to the pic showing her body looking different at different moments.

8. They may just be naturally thin.

While some models post pics of green salads and wellness smoothies, others choose to show themselves eating junk food now and then to prove it’s possible to eat all those sweet and fatty foods and stay thin. Even if they manage to stay in good shape, occasionally eating hamburgers or pizza, it doesn’t mean this trick will work for the rest of us. We are all different, we have different body types and metabolisms, and some people may find it easier to combine perfect bodies with eating whatever they want, just because their body can manage it.

Don’t compare yourself to others, love and respect yourself, and be particular about the examples you follow.

10 Non-Alcoholic Uses for Vodka That Most People Don’t Know

If you thought that vodka could only be used for one reason, after reading this article you might be very surprised. In reality it has many uses and some of them are truly unexpected. From cleaning tricks and making your hair look great to the crunchiest chicken you have ever had— who would think that vodka is such a multi-purpose liquid.

We at Bright Side love finding useful tricks and we prepared this selection for you to try.

1. Jellyfish sting treatment

If you’ve ever experienced a jellyfish sting, you know that it really burns. Most of the time it’s not dangerous but can be really painful. First, wash the affected area with salt water, it cools the heat and neutralizes the venom. Then pour some vodka onto the affected area, it will dry out the stingers and decrease the pain.

2. Insect repellent

Vodka is a simple, eco-friendly insect repellent for mosquitos, bees, wasps, and ants. Fill a spray bottle with vodka and spray on your skin before going outside, or spray directly at the insects. If you don’t like the smell, you can always add a scent to it by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Keep in mind that some essential oils also have insect repellent properties. And make sure you use just basic vodka, without any flavoring or sugar.

3. Poison ivy rash treatment

There is nothing worse than a nice walk in the forest that gets totally ruined by poison ivy. To avoid the rash, pour vodka on the affected area immediately. Alcohol washes away the urushiol oil, which is responsible for the itching

4. Keep flowers fresh

Vodka is also known for having antibacterial properties. Add a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of sugar to the water in the vase. It will kill the bacteria that grows around the stems and in the water and you will get a chance to enjoy your flowers for a little longer.

5. Clean chrome, glass, and porcelain surfaces

You can clean almost anything with vodka.

Mix a cup of vodka with 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 tsp of liquid soap to get a perfect cleaning liquid. You can use it in a spray bottle or just dip a clean cloth in the mixture and wipe the places that need cleaning. It cleans very well and doesn’t leave any sticky residue.

6. Homemade lavender extract

All you need are a clean glass jar, vodka, and fresh lavender flowers. Pack the jar with flowers and fill it up with vodka. Seal the lid tightly and leave in the sun for a couple of weeks, shaking every now and then. After 2 weeks, strain the liquid. This lavender liquid extract is very effective for pain relief.

7. Crunchy fried chicken

If you like crunchy, battered chicken, you really should try adding a splash of vodka into the batter and then cook as usual. You will get a darker and crispier crust. If you have children or people trying to avoid alcohol, you shouldn’t worry about adding alcohol to the food because it will evaporate during cooking.

8. Tighten your pores

Mix equal parts vodka and water or green tea and add 2 drops of rosemary and jojoba essential oil, soak a cotton ball in the mixture, and apply it to your face. Beauticians believe that this solution cleans the pores and also helps tighten them. Keep in mind that it might also dry your skin too much. It is not the best solution if you have dry or sensitive skin.

9. Get rid of the odor in your towels

During the summer, especially if you live a humid climate, you may sometimes find that your towels smell musty. To get rid of the odor, just add 1/3 cup of vodka into your washing machine when you do the wash. After the tub fills up with water, let the towels soak for an hour, then continue the normal wash.

10. Straightening your hair

Vodka can do a few good things to your hair. It strengthens the hair follicles, prevents frizziness, balances the sebum production and, generally speaking, makes your hair look shiny and healthy. Mix equal amounts of vodka and hair conditioner, apply it on your hair, leave for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse. Repeat this treatment twice a month, any more could dry the scalp.

10 Weight Loss Tips That Work If Diets Don’t Help Anymore

10 Weight Loss Tips That Work If Diets Don’t Help Anymore

According to the results of studies by scientists from big U.S. Universities, only 1 out of 5 people managed to lose the extra weight that was at least 10% of their body mass. One of the reasons that makes losing weight such a hard task is the plateau effect. This is a phenomenon where the weight stops decreasing despite all efforts.

Of course, when there is no progress, people get disappointed and tend to stop leading a healthy lifestyle. However, it is possible to fight the plateau effect.

Bright Side has found scientifically proven ways to make the weight decrease even if you are in the plateau phase.

1. Do weight training.

Doing weight training is less effective for losing weight than cardio workouts but they help to keep the level of metabolism which is important when you are on a long-term diet. Weight training makes the metabolism much faster and doesn’t let the body switch to the low energy consumption mode.

But don’t forget to eat some protein after a workout: the muscles will get stronger and you won’t have any extra fat.

2. Change the caloric value during the week.

When we are on a diet, our smart bodies adapt to smaller amounts of food, cutting down the energy consumption. In other words, the body adapts to the new living conditions, still conserving the extra pounds — in case there will be no food at all. And when you start eating fewer calories, the body understands that its decision was right.

In order to trick the body, you can use the caloric cycles. 2 days a week, you should eat about 1,000 or 1,200 kcal with almost no carbs, and the rest of the days, eat 1,500 kcal. This trick won’t let the metabolism slow down and will create the necessary caloric deficit.

3. Tell the difference between a real plateau and an imaginary one.

During the first days of the diet, extra fluids leave our bodies which makes the number on the scale drop quickly. But in order to lose just 1 lb, you need to have a 3,500-calorie deficit. It doesn’t matter how you achieve it, but the progress won’t be fast.

Many people think that losing weight slowly is a plateau, so they lose interest and drop the diet. Be patient and don’t step on the scale more than once a week: this way, the progress will seem bigger.

4. Eat more protein and vegetables.

Low-carbohydrate diets are believed to the be the best strategy for losing weight. Protein and fiber make us full and increase the metabolism. Carbohydrates make the insulin level rise making us hungry. So if you are trying to lose weight, it’s better to eat a piece of low-fat meat rather than a sweet fruit.

5. Change the exercises you do.

Thousands of years of fighting for survival taught our bodies one simple thing: resources should be saved by any means possible. After some time, the human body adapts to the exercises you do. So, after several weeks of similar workouts, the progress will definitely slow down.

There is only one solution: once every 1-1.5 months, you should change your workout program. There are a lot of different options: change out yoga for pilates, do new exercises, train new muscles that you haven’t before, and change the weights that you use.

6. Eat tasty food.

The ability to resist the urge to eat depends on the right function of the brain. However, if a person hasn’t eaten anything tasty for a long time, their brain starts to tell them that a piece of chocolate or a biscuit will give them much more joy that these foods really can.

This is why nutrition experts recommend including small portions of “prohibited” foods. If you let yourself relax from time to time, you have a smaller chance of losing control at some point and interrupting the diet.

7. Recalculate the caloric value of the food you eat.

The number of calories necessary for losing weight depends not only on physical activity but also on the body mass. If an overweight person eats only 2,000 kcal a day, they will lose weight, and if a small woman does the same, she will gain weight.

Don’t forget to recalculate the caloric value of your food after every 10 pounds you lose.

8. Keep a strict sleeping schedule.

As scientists found out, it’s impossible to have bad sleep and lose weight in a healthy way. There are a lot of reasons why, but in short: if you don’t sleep enough, your body is stressed. Stress leads to feeling hungry and a change in metabolism. So be sure to sleep enough no matter what.

9. Count calories.

Scientists proved that people who lose weight without any supervision stop tracking what and how much they eat within several weeks. Of course, the progress stops and you can’t lose weight. So, you should always know how many calories you eat.

10. Take body characteristics into account.

Everyone knows that right before the beginning of the menstrual cycle, women’s bodies retain much more water, just like when people drink too much water (especially before sleep), eat salty foods, drink alcohol and eat dairy products. You should take into account the individual reaction to different foods in different people. So, analyze what you eat and how it influences your body.

For example, the author of the article couldn’t lose weight because of eating too many tomatoes. Yes, they are vegetables and they don’t have any extra calories, but for some reason, in this woman’s case, they didn’t let water leave her body.

After you stop eating some foods, the swelling will disappear within the next 2 days. So don’t let several extra pounds make you panic and desperate. Forget about the scale and use a tape measure ribbon: it will easily prove that you are making progress.

Have you ever had the plateau effect when you tried to lose weight? How did you deal with it? Share your experience in the comment section below.

5 Challenging Gender Stereotypes That Don’t Let Us Be Happy

A woman’s place is not just in the kitchen anymore. And more and more men accompany women when they are in labor. But it’s still not quite clear who should pay for dinner at a restaurant.

There is no difference between genders in terms of intelligence or emotional perception which has been proven by more than 2,000 scientific studies. But for some reason, any of us can easily describe what a “true man” and a “true woman” should be like and these descriptions vary from person to person. These differences are caused by gender stereotypes (the ideas of what men and women should be like). If these social rules have become a problem, maybe we should think about changing them?

Bright Side talks about gender stereotypes that don’t just cause a lot of heated arguments online, but also limit choices in our daily lives.

Stereotype № 1: Girls are supposed to be beautiful and kind, and boys should be brave and strong.

Children have no idea how they should behave according to their gender, but adults explain these things to them very quickly. Boys are taught to be ashamed of themselves if they cry, and girls are taught to never mess up their dresses. Psychologist Christia Spears Brown in her book Parenting Beyond Pink & Blue: How to Raise Your Kids Free of Gender Stereotypes explains that when talking to boys, adults use numbers and examples from nature, and when talking to girls, they mention appearance more. Guess who is more worried about their appearance and extra weight?

Brown says that any child, no matter their gender, should have 3 types of toys: one for their intelligence, one for their body, and one for their emotions. Puzzles develop intelligence, bicycles and balls are necessary for physical activity, and playing with dolls and soft toys teaches children to be kind and caring.

Don’t prohibit your son from playing with plates and strollers and girls should be allowed to play with toy cars. Don’t use phrases like, “Don’t fight, you’re a girl,” or “You have to be strong, you are a boy.” Teach your son to cook and clean, and your daughter to use a screwdriver and a hammer. And then, maybe boys won’t be ashamed of using paternity leave and girls will have more freedom when choosing their profession: pilot, plumber, teacher, or any other job.

Stereotype № 2: Men should pay for women at a restaurant.

American woman Ashleigh Bradley‏ complained on Twitter that she went on a date where she told the guy that it wasn’t going to work out and he told her to pay for 50% of the restaurant bill. This caused a heated argument online: should a man pay for a woman during the dating period. And if yes, then what do they pay for?

Psychologist Marina Commisarova says that the traditional courtship (flowers, asking out, and opening doors) is just a romantic gesture that shouldn’t be mistaken for being ready to satisfy all the needs of a woman. Courtship means that a man is interested, which is nice but if a woman wants to be respected and if she wants her opinion to be taken seriously then she needs to refuse this constant care.

If it’s about a balanced relationship, then ideally a man should offer to pay and a woman should refuse. And if he gives her a present, she should give him a present too. When a woman really needs help, she should ask for it, and a man should be ready to help. But in the situations when a woman can easily take care of herself, she should do just that.

Actress Emma Watson said, “I like it when someone opens a door for me or invites me to dinner. The question is, would a man feel offended if I held a door for him? If not, then we’re fine: we are just being polite to each other.”

Stereotype № 3: Men are polygamous and women should be okay with this.

The numbers in studies differ but all scientists agree on one thing: men cheat more often on their partners than women. Some people think that men have some kind of a “gene” that makes them cheat. But the reality is that neither men nor women are monogamous from birth. The fact that women loved other men before meeting their husbands proves that they are polygamous too.

Fidelity is a conscious choice and cheating is a good reason to think about whether you need this relationship or not. Even if you don’t want to break up, maybe it’s better to stay away from each other for a little while: remembering that the one who cheated should be putting in some kind of effort if they want to stay together.

Stereotype № 4: Women are worse managers than men.

Because many employers believe that women are not good for management positions, they rarely get jobs where they can showcase their leadership skills. This idea creates the “glass ceiling” effect — an invisible barrier that limits women’s career growth because of reasons that have nothing to do with their professional skills.

There is also a huge wage gap: men earn more money for the same job than women. However, famous psychologist Jordan Peterson says that the salary gap is caused not just by gender differences but by personality traits like being too soft or emotional. The necessary “harder” traits are suppressed in women, so it becomes harder for them to earn a better salary and move forward.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence found out how much her male colleagues got for the same movie and she was really angry with herself for not being persistent enough when negotiating her salary because of not wanting to get a bad reputation. Since then, Jennifer and other Hollywood actresses have been fighting for equal salaries and they serve as an example for other women fighting for their rights.

Stereotype № 5: Men don’t cry.

According to studies, men experience anger, sadness, and fear just as often as women but they express only anger, suppressing fear and sadness (unlike women who suppress their anger and express sadness and fear). Also, men don’t think that they can be compassionate, but the calculation of physiological and mimic reactions shows men and women have the same ability for compassion.

In other words, men are under a heavy load of gender stereotypes just like women: they are forced to hide their emotions and not show that they’re having a hard time. But these stereotypes make their lives much harder.

Emma Watson said, “I hate the idea that men don’t have the right to cry. They can’t express their emotions, they can’t talk about how and what they feel. It’s terrible. The ability to express your emotions doesn’t make you weak, it makes you a person. If you have a heart beating in your chest and you care, it’s great!”
