Is 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' a True Story? We Look At Who the Colorful Cast is Based On

image

I can understand if you don’t want to watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel if you’re a huge hater of comedy, firecracker female protagonists, the mile-a-minute wit of Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman Palladino, gorgeous period costumes, and Emmy-winning prestige television. For the rest of us, we welcome Miriam “Midge” Maisel into our lives with vigor, the show returning to Amazon Prime for a healthy binge December 5th. However, new converts might be wondering, is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a true story? Or really another genius concoction from the Dr. Seuss-hatted head of A S-P?

In a word: no. In a bunch of other words: the world Midge is breaking into is populated with very colorful, and real, characters. Moreover, a little detective work suggests that Amy and co. drew inspiration from a platter of ground-breaking, and ball-busting comediennes. Oh, and her own father.

So as to who Mrs. Maisel is based on…

image

Kids, you type in “female Jewish comedians” and there’s a sad dearth of results, like even on Wikipedia. One heavily Botoxed face that pops up, though, is that of Joan Rivers (RIP, the joke is what she would’ve wanted). In the early ’60s, the former Fashion Police host made the rounds at New York clubs including the Gaslight Cafe, the famed coffeehouse where Midge’s infamous meltdown turns into a comedy career. Both ASP and star Rachel Brosnahan cite her as an influence when constructing Midge Maisel. In fact, Rachel thoroughly researched Joan when preparing for her role.

“I always liked Joan Rivers but I had no idea just how extraordinary she was and how much of a trailblazer she was at that time until I really dove into this research,” Rachel told Metro. “She was fascinating, so I’m newly devastated that she’s no longer with us, she was an incredible woman. She’s so complicated.”

Complicated, yes, and completely uncensored when it came to “http://www.distractify.com/”Early on, Joan Rivers was out there talking about stuff that was so taboo, what it meant to be a woman and things like abortion and this double standard that existed between men and women,” Rachel continued. “That’s certainly something you’ll see Midge do as well.”

image

Amy frames Midge Maisel as more of a slight homage. “There is little nod to Joan Rivers in that she’s a nice Jewish girl who grew up in comfortable surroundings and was educated, but went a different path,” Amy shared. “Joan wanted to be a paid actress and comedy was her day job, what a day job. But Midge’s trajectory is very different than that. So it’s a little tip of the hat to the genius of Joan.”

Joan doesn’t get all the credit, though. In interviews with the NPR and the New York Times, Rachel cited the slightly lesser known Jean Carroll as a reference for the more glamorous side of Midge’s routines. “She was the earliest example I could find of women in stand-up,” Rachel told The Hollywood Reporter. “I found stuff of hers as early as 1955. She was fabulous in this big dress with lots of petticoats and pearls, and she sings a little. It’s a little bit vaudevillian still.” She adds that Moms Mabley and Phyllis Diller also served as light influences, with the latter serving to inform another character on the show (we’ll get there).

But Amy Sherman-Palladino also drew from her personal life.

Non-spoiler-y spoiler: The season one finale caps off with the epitaph, “For Don Sherman: The First of Sit-Down Comics.” See, Amy came from a showbiz clan, with a cabaret dancer mother and, you guessed it, a stand-up comic father. When Vanity Fair asked if she drew elements from her parents’ on-stage experiences, the ever-entertaining multi-hyphenate quipped, “We had no other survival skills in my family.”

Husband and collaborator Dan Palladino stepped in to elaborate how the inspiration came from Amy’s parents, particular Don Sherman. “He has passed away now, but you get to know all of the joy of a guy like that, and a lot of the insecurities that are part and parcel of the stand-up comedy business,” Dan said. “He would be hanging out with his friends in the backyard, talking about opening for Johnny Mathis or Danny Kaye. It’s funny, we were doing research for our Catskills sequence and our researchers found an advertisement for Amy’s dad playing the Catskills in 1970!”

Clearly there’s been a pay-off, and Amy gave her late dad a shout-out when the awards started coming in. “My father inspired this, really, so I had to turn a 6-foot-2 Bronx Jew into Rachel Brosnahan,” she said in her Emmy acceptance speech for comedy writing. “That’s Hollywood!”

There’s a real-life figure behind Susie Myerson.

image

While a potpourri of people contribute to Midge’s unique persona, Alex Borstein kept her inspiration for Susie pretty streamlined. In an interview with LA Times, Alex revealed that her mother and grandmother, two “tough Hungarian immigrants,” wove their way into the character. The other influence? Sue Mengers, a big-time Hollywood agent who represented the likes of Candice Bergen, Cher, and beloved-by-the-show Barbra Streisand.

Jane Lynch’s Sophie Lennon could be based on at least one comedian.

image

The gimmick-loving snob-in-a-fatsuit is considered to be the top female comedian in Maisel’s New York for her housefrau from Queens routine. That’s a… hella specific mood, you know? However, Vulture points out that Sophie bears a resemblance to Phyllis Diller in her style of comedy. Like Sophie, Phyllis pushed the idea of a persona to sell her act, telling jokes as a housewife with a dead-beat fictional husband, Fang.

And duh, Lenny Bruce was a real, and legendary, comedian.

image

I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but not everyone dates the Jack Kerouac-worshipping guys in high school. In short: Lenny Bruce was real as hell and regarded as one of the best stand-up comics of all time. A champion of free speech, Lenny was arrested no shortage of times during his career, most notably on obscenity charges in the early ’60s.

While Lenny’s appearance on Maisel is a fictionalized version, the show cleverly nods to his antics. In fact, at the end of the pilot episode, Midge bails Lenny out of jail. This move ends up being the catalyst to her blossoming career, and as the first season goes on he becomes sort of her comedy spirit guide.

So while The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a technicolor world of fiction, it’s painted with the lives of real people who just wanted to get a laugh out of someone. Who knows what phantom figures of the late ’50s will show up in the next chapter!

See What the Cast of 'Twilight' Looks Like 10 Years After the Premiere

image

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since the love story between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen premiered on the big screen.

One decade later, Stephanie Meyer’s vampire franchise, Twilight, is still one of our favorites to watch, thanks to a cast that includes Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Anna Kendrick, Kellan Lutz, and of course, the one and only Robert Pattinson. Since 2008, the stars of the hit film have gone on to do big things in Hollywood, but they will always been Forks residents to us.

“Every part that I’ve ever played has shaped me in such a significant way…I know from an outsider’s perspective you might have something to say about that like in general. But I kind of view it as every other thing that I’ve invested in and really loved. And I’m lucky to have had that experience,” Kristen said in 2017. “I got a lot from [Twilight] and it’s made me who I am.”

So, what are the Cullens and rest of the Twilight cast up to today? Keep scrolling for an update on your favorite character from the first film.

See Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and 'The Fault in Our Stars' Cast on Their Very First Red Carpets

image

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly five years since the premiere of The Fault in Our Stars — but by the time Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and the rest of the cast hit the red carpet to celebrate the movie’s release, most of them were already Hollywood veterans.

Luckily, we can look back at the stars of the John Green adaptation on their very first red carpets, and see just how far they have come. For Shailene, aka Hazel, that moment came in 2006, right after her small role as Kaitlin Cooper on The O.C. but right before her big break as Amy on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. For Ansel, who portrayed Gus on the big screen, it was just a few months before his high school graduation at the premiere of his stage debut in the off-Broadway show Regrets.

We don’t know about you, but these throwbacks make us want to watch the love story all over again, even if it does make us cry every single time (Buy The Fault in Our Stars here.) Keep scrolling to see the stars of TFIOS on their very first red carpets:

Ferrante Lovers, Meet the Cast of HBO's 'My Brilliant Friend'

image

Ferrante fans, mark your calendars. November 18th will be the happiest day since Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay came out to complete the Neapolitan Quartet back in 2013. That’s because My Brilliant Friend, an adaptation of the elusive Elena Ferrante’s first novel, will be hitting the small screen and premiering on HBO this coming Sunday.

My Brilliant Friend, which starts off the 60-year friendship told in the Neapolitan Novels, follows a young Lenu and Lila as they grow up in post-World War II Naples. Since the books have been read by over 10 million people worldwide, Ferrante feverists are expecting the TV adaptation to be the real deal.

And though some are confused, to say the least, about the HBO series being directed by a man — Saverio Costanzo, of 2014’s Hungry Hearts — most are eager to know who will bring the timeless Lenu and Lila to life.

image

The grueling casting process, which took seven months, auditioned over 9,000 children for the roles of the two lifelong friends. That’s because the Italian director (and Ferrante herself, apparently) were attached to the idea of casting girls from the Neapolitan region of Campania who could do justice to the frequent jumps into dialect that the novel plays with.

So, who will play Elena Greco (Lenu) and Raffaela Cerullo (Lina/Lila) in the upcoming HBO show? Read on to find out.

Elisa Del Genio as Young Lenu

image

Casting directors relied heavily on Ferrante’s character descriptions when choosing the right actors for the roles. “Our priority was to be faithful to these descriptions, not only from a physical point of view, but also from a psychological and behavioral one,” said casting director Laura Muccino.

Eleven-year-old Elisa  wouldn’t even had made it to the audition had her brother not been vying for the role of Enzo. However, she fit the role of the young narrating protagonist perfectly.

Margherita Mazzucco as Teen Lenu

image

16-year-old Margherita wowed directors when she auditioned to play the role of teenage Elena Greco, the story’s narrator. Without any acting experience, and after having missed the initial auditions at her school, Margherita showed up to read for the role after someone handed her a flyer and she asked her mom if she could check it out.

“It’s so hard to find a presence that is as strong as a protagonist needs to be, but that doesn’t cover the light of Lila,” said the director of his struggles to find the perfect person to fit Lenu’s shoes. But as soon as he met Elisa and Margherita, he knew he’d found them.

According to Saverio Costanzo’s conversation with Vulture, Elena Ferrante herself gave her blessing to these two actresses as well.

Ludovica Nasti as Young Lila

image

Newcomer Ludovica, 12, says she approached the audition as if it were a game — pretty much already embodying the role of Lila that she would come to play.

Her sister, who had already read the books, told her “You are Lila. You have bruises and scratches on your legs. You’re just like her. You have dark hair. You’re identical,” Ludovica shared with Vulture. The director himself calls the 12-year-old “an unbelievable gem.”

We can’t wait to see Ludovica in the role of young Lila and are sure this young star will be securing many more fabulous roles in the years to come.

Gaia Girace as Teen Lila

image

The actress who was chosen to portray a teenage Lila was the only member of the cast to have ever done any semblance of acting. And her scrappiness and confidence made her perfect for the role of teenage Lila, who, after being disallowed from continuing her education into middle school, ends up picking up most of her smarts on the streets.

“When I met Gaia, she told me, ‘I’m going to be an actress, period,’” says Saverio of their first encounter. When Vulture asked Gaia — who grew up in the same town as Sophia Loren — who her favorite actress was, her answer uncannily resembled something Lila would say: “Myself.”

We can’t wait for the premiere of My Brilliant Friend on November 18 at 9PM on HBO and to see how these addicting-to-read novels will unfold on the small screen. The eight-episode series will air Sundays and Mondays through the rest of the fall.

The 'RuPaul Drag Race: All-Stars' Season 4 Cast Might Just Be the Best One Yet!

image

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars is back for Season 4, and TBH, the cast is better than ever. The reality series, which is back on VH1, will bring together some mega queens from seasons past for another chance to take home the crown, or at least lip sync for their life in hopes RuPaul won’t ask them to sashay away.

“The girls on All-Stars 4 are exciting and they have so much more to show,” the host told Entertainment Weekly. “I think it will shock fans, although I don’t think they’ll be as disappointed. We always try to do something fresh and interesting, and sometimes it turns out in a way that you don’t really expect. I love Trixie [Mattel]. She’s a real superstar, but I really didn’t count on the other girls who came back being so vindictive.”

If you missed the last All-Stars season, there was a major RPDR controversy when Trixie Mattel was crowned the winner over fan-favorite Shangela Laquifa Wadley. So, while Season 4 won’t be as divisive (fingers crossed), we do expect the queens to bring the drama — with a side of shade, of course. Keep reading to see who will be returning for the RPDR: All-Stars Season 4 cast.

It's Whatever, But We Have Our 'Clueless' Remake Dream Cast Picked Out

image

When Paramount Pictures announced a remake of Clueless was underway, the news broke the internet. From publishing thinkpieces on movies that should never be rebooted to avid fans expressing excitement on Twitter, the Clueless reboot has had everyone talking.

And though we don’t know too much about it just yet and it hasn’t been cast yet, we do know Marquita Robinson, a writer and editor on Netflix’s GLOW, will pen the script for Clueless’ remake, at least according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plus, Girl’s Trip writer Tracy Oliver is set to produce the film, so it’s not complete and utter doom.

If the rest of the Clueless franchise is any indication, the 2019 remake will probably bring in a lot of cash, too. Although the initial movie was a hard sell, it ended up making $56 million in the U.S. on a meager $12 million budget. The film’s success led to a brief TV spinoff and even Clueless, the Musical opening in NYC next month.

image

But the reboot will have to get a lot of things right, if it wants to satisfy die-hard fans. The original film, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, was set in the ‘90s and it was SO ‘90s. I mean, it epitomized the culture of the decade unlike any other piece of art. OK, maybe Kids — but I digress.

The film is going to need quite a facelift to stand up in 2019. For one, Cher and Dionne, named after “great singers of the past” will definitely require a moniker update. As for the tartan skirts and ready-to-wear Alaïa? Athleisure or a stunning Jacquemus might be more fitting.

So, who could play a convincing and updated version of the Bronson Alcott High School students?

Read on for our dream cast.

Kiernan Shipka as Cher

image

Kiernan Shipka, the little girl from Mad Men is about to celebrate her 19th birthday. Feel old yet? Recently, she’s been on screen as the eponymous character in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — which also means Kiernan is no stranger to reboots. Plus, her uncanny resemblance to Alicia Silverstone makes this casting choice a no-brainer.

Yara Shahidi as Dionne

image

The 18-year-old actress and activist is so wonderful in her role as Zoey on ABC’s Black-ish, the character got her own spinoff, Grown-ish, on Freeform. She also happens to be as fun to follow on social media as she is on the big screen — and her Instagram skills will come in handy for the Clueless reboot, which will probably rely heavily on today’s digital zeitgeist. All in all, we think she’d be the perfect best friend to Cher. I mean, who else could pull off Dionne’s many fashion looks so fabulously?

Awkwafina as Tai

image

It’s hard to imagine anyone else filling the shoes of late Brittany Murphy. And because it’s sad to consider, there’s only one person we can think of who might do Tai’s role justice. Queens-born Awkwafina hasn’t been a household name for very long, but in the past few years, she’s secured roles in Oceans 8, Crazy Rich Asians, and recently even hosted SNL. We think she’d be perfect to play a naive, bubbly new girl who is eager to make friends.

Paul Rudd as Josh (again)

image

Who else could play Cher’s stepbrother-turned-love-interest better than Paul Rudd? We feel very “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” about this one. Plus, if he cut his hair short and dressed for 2019, he’d probably look exactly the same. (Though the age difference between him and Kiernan is admittedly gross… so maybe not.)

Jaden Smith as Murray

image

Jaden Smith is probably better known for his eccentricity than he is for his acting chops these days, but playing Murray in a Clueless reboot could change that. The 20-year-old has starred in films like After Earth, The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid, and we think it’d be hilarious to watch him teach Dionne how to drive.

Ilana Glazer as Amber

image

Writer, comedian and actress Ilana Glazer is best known for her work on Broad City, which is coming to an end this season. All the better, as far as we’re concerned — this will free up her schedule to play Amber. The redhead who popularized the iconic W-hand gesture to signify “whatever” is definitely going to need a 2019 update. And we’re confident Ilana would know exactly what to do with the part.

Hasan Minaj as Travis

image

All it took was the Netflix special Homecoming to sell us on Hasan Minhaj last year, and we think he would be incredible on screen as Tai’s stoner crush, Travis. The skater-boy part of his character is harder to picture, but the 2019 remake will hopefully replace this detail with something more fitting to the times — like Bird scooters or Citibikes.

Timotee Chamalet as Christian

image

Be still my heart. Who in the world would be better to play Cher’s gay bestie, Christian? Initially Cher’s crush, the two eventually strike up a friendship over their shared tastes in art and fashion — and we can’t imagine anyone better than Call Me By Your Name and Beautiful Boy‘s Timothée Chamalet to play the part.

Stephen Colbert as Mel Horowitz

image

While Stephen Colbert is best known for The Colbert Report, The Daily Show and Late Night with Stephen Colbert, he also has plenty of acting credits under his belt. Perhaps most memorably, he played in The Hobbit, The Love Guru and Bewitched. We also think he would be a hilarious dad to millennial Cher. Just imagine him using legal jargon to argue over what a dress is, or how long it takes to get anywhere in LA.

We also think John Cho would make a hilarious Mr. Hall, and we propose that he fall in love with Chrissy Teigen as Miss Geist. Her quirk and online humor would allow her to play a perfect 2019 version of the teacher — and the two have already had Twitter beef, which would provide the perfect energy for an on-screen fling.

We don’t know how we’ll feel about the actual movie, but we do know we’re excited for them to announce the cast.

Meet the Cast of "Sweet Home", Your Newest Renovation Obsession

image

If you love home renovation reality TV shows (c’mon, we all do, even if we say we don’t) then you’re going to go ga-ga over Bravo’s newest TV show, Sweet Home, about the Welch’s and their interior design firm.

You might remember Jennifer, her ex-husband Josh, and her pal Angie “Pumps” Sullivan from their show on Bravo, Sweet Home Oklahoma. This time around, they’ve dropped the “OK” from the show’s title and are shifting focus.

What can you expect from Sweet Home when it drops on November 2 (10 pm ET)? Well, you’ve got the “happily unmarried” working relationship of Jennifer and Josh and their team. They encounter problems like handling tough clients and getting the right materials, plus the trials of running a business. Plus Angie Pumps’ quirks and larger-than-life personality help keep everything fun.

image

Bravo’s chosen an interesting firm with an equally interesting cast of characters who are sure to give reality TV and aspiring homebodies (yes, those are a thing) hours of delightful programming. Check out the cast of Sweet Home so you can be best prepared to get yourself on that show and get your house looking all spiffy and oozing with interior design excellence.

Jennifer Welch

image

The Big J is a founding member and the name behind Jennifer Welch Designs. She is a Dallas, Texas native and has been working on her interior design business for the past 20 years with her now ex-husband, Josh Welch. Specializing in design for both residential and commercial spaces, Jennifer is known for her painstaking attention to detail. In addition to running her successful business, she’s also a mom to two sons, Dylan, 15, and Roman, 13.

Angie “Pumps” Sullivan

image

Angie, in addition to having one of the best nicknames I’ve ever heard of in my entire life (right next to my boy’s friend “Sleepy” who has a lazy eye and was a great boxer), she’s an awesome attorney by trade and has a tight friendship with both Jennifer and Josh. Her friendship with Jennifer began when Big J walked into Angie’s home over 20 years ago and called her out for having a hideous painting of silk flowers in her home. She practices marriage and family law and is a mother to three kids herself, 18-year-old Sam, 16-year-old Emily, and 13-year-old Luke.

Josh Welch

image

Born in Paris—no, not that Paris, the one in Texas—Josh was a criminal defense attorney until 2012. Now he’s a photographer and even helps his ex Jennifer’s design firm by providing shots of her work to post to social media and her website. He’s super involved in his sons’ lives, especially their basketball games, and is still super close with his ex and Angie. He also rocks a mean piece of eyewear, which not many dudes can pull off. Seriously, I would look ridiculous in those glasses, but Josh is crushing it.

Alex Hodges

image

Even though Alex has the dubious (in Jennifer’s eyes) distinction of being a millennial, the Oklahoma City native has a crazy work ethic that captured Jennifer’s heart. She works as a project manager for the firm and happens to be a member of the same sorority as Angie. She’s also constantly going on about the benefits of a gluten-free diet, which may be annoying to some people but I gotta say ever since I’ve been staying away from bread (for the most part) for the past few months I feel much better. You might have a point there, Alex.

Sabah Khan

image

Sabah immigrated to the U.S. with her parents when she was only five years old, and is the office manager at the firm. She got the job after meeting Josh at the Apple Store where she worked. The two became friends and he was struck by her work ethic and personality, so he had her meet Jennifer, who welcomed Sabah into the crew.

Sarah Moll

image

Another Oklahoma City native, Sarah is an interior design wunderkind who graduated at the top of her class. After interning at Jennifer Welch Designs, Jennifer brought her on full-time as an associate designer and is prepping her for the big leagues of home renovation.

Sounds like I’ve got a new reality home design show I have to pretend to not like but will secretly binge while my wife’s asleep. But please, please don’t tell her that. I get enough flak from her for all of the other Bravo shows I watch.
